View Full Version : What Have You Won?

Just curious. I've never won anything more than free fries at McDonald's.

Has anybody here ever won a sweepstakes or contest with a significant prize?

My Grandma once years ago won $1000 cash in the monthly (I think) drawing for customers at Piggly Wiggly. That's the nearest big winner story we have in our family.

I've had a couple of lucky contest moments. One time I was eating at McDonald's during their Monopoly game and the game piece said "instant $50 winner." The other patrons in the restaurant clapped when I announced the win!

This was almost 20 years ago...was working retail on a very slow night and the radio station that was on was having a contest. When the dj asked the contest question I knew the answer and decided to call in. I couldn't believe I got through! My name landed in a drawing with the other winners from that week. My name wound up being drawn as the winner of the grand prize. My choice: a trip for 4 to I forget where or $5k in cash. Well shoot, being young I took the cash! Stupid me was young and frivolous with that money but it was fun!

I never win anything...if there are 100 door prizes and 101 people at the event, guess who goes home without anything?

When I was young, I put my name in for a mini bike at a horse show. I wanted a mini-bike more than anything in the world. They called the name and it was my last name with a slight variation of my first name...like Daniel and Danielle. Anyway, my father and I ran over. I told the people doing the drawing that I had bad handwriting. Guess who walked up behind us? Daniel. He had won.

So, I knew I was getting close and the following week put my name in for a drawing. I won a camera...exactly like the one I had a home...EXACTLY.

I gave up at that point.

I used to win stuff. The first year I went to the USEA convention I won a winter riding coat. The next year I won a big yellow watch. Haven't won much recently.

I won a photo shoot with Gabrielle Boiselle, I posted about it on COTH...it was supposedly worth over $1000. I had a hell of a time actually getting my pictures handed over to me, and NEVER recieved the calendar I was supposed to. But at least I walked away with some pretty cool shots of me and my horse!
Edit: here are some of the pictures if anybody wants to see them!

I won a western breastplate as a doorprize. I ride English. The best thing I ever won was a huge chocolate village as a door prize at a chocolate show. It must have weighed 10 pounds and took 3 whole days to eat! :D My friend won a year's supply of coffee and wanted to trade with me. As if. ;)

I know three people that have won between 3.5 and 10 million in the lottery. Unfortunately, the laws of probably seem to be against 4 people who know each other winning

I do buy tickets though

My mom's sorority sister's husband's best friend (dog's cousin's godmother's lol) bought a lottery ticket to show his kids that lottery tickets are a waste...and won $9 million.

When I was younger I won tickets to an NSYNC concert at a school fair, $150 in a raffle, and a few years ago photo editing software (that I already had) from a Glamour giveaway.

Nov. 26, 2009, 12:09 PM
I won a $100 shopping spree when I was a little kid at JCPenny's. The slips were in bars of chocolate, and I was with my mom. I took my candy bar and wadded up the paper, and my mom was like, "What are you doing?!" and grabbed it from me.

I just wanted the candy.

I can't win a free lunch at a dog fight for the most part. "Best" thing I won was a fairly expensive halter as a door prize. Said halter would nicely fit a Clyde, not either of my horses, but it lives, along with a lead rope in the vehicle just in case :). Other winnings include a 45 rpm record by Roy Orbison, and a few 'free' lottery tickets on the rare scratch and win purchaes I make

Nov. 26, 2009, 01:32 PM
I think I won Britney Spears' first CD at a raffel in elementary school!

Nov. 26, 2009, 02:19 PM
My mom won a brand new Pontiac G6 from the local dealership.

Me too! CT and MA lotto winnners, one was my dentist. I'm doomed to work for every penny for the rest of my days I guess.

When I was young and stupid, I used to enter each and every one of those mail in sweepstakes that would flood our mailboxes, and all I ever won was a pair of pantyhose and a dishtowel, I'm serious.

I did win 75.00 in Oregon with a scratch off lottery ticket. Lost it all at the casinos in Reno the next day.

$1250 off of a custom Stubben :)

I've had good luck at the Beval's sale raffles!

One year I won a GORGEOUS integrity linens wool quarter sheet. its a very light rosy pink with chocolate brown plaid. Sounds tacky, but seriously, this is lovely. Unfortunately it's a size 80" and I'm a pony person! And im horse shopping right now... and considering my size (5' tall) im not looking for a huge horse. I let my friends borrow it, and I use it as a backup cooler.

This past year I also won a few baskets at the bevals sale, but nothing nearly as exciting. Mostly just useful things like treats and grooming stuff (some really nice oster things actually. ive got 2 new favourite curries!)

Not to try to sound all awesome...but I have had some GREAT luck!

When I was little I won an awesome halter at a 4-H show ($5 entry).
When I was a teenager I won $500 worth of Absorbine products from the Equine Affaire ($5 entry).
Recently, Lunch for 15 friends at a local Japanese Restaurant.
When I was in college, 2 years ago, I won the BIG ONE:

$1,000 spending $
Round-trip airfare for 4 friends, including myself.
8-day Beach and Bush ride in Australia on Australian Stock Horses, led by 3-time Olympic rider Alex Watson
Rainforests, Noosa Beach, Cattle Drives, and Hinterlands and Private Beach Ride in Brisbane and Sydney
Local Radio interviews whilst on Horseback, plus a newspaper article in every town we went to.
4 days on Fraser Island Resort
Guests of Honor at the Australian Zoo
All meals, transportation, etc taken care of.
5-star resorts, little "nook" inn's along the way

Literally the dream vacation of a lifetime. It was AMAZING. Every single thing was taken care of. We literally arrived, gave them our bags, and from then on our bags were delivered wherever we ended up riding that day, horses were tacked/untacked, etc. and on and on and on.

Here are pictures if anybody is interested. They offer this ride year round except the rainy season, so if anybody is looking for an amazing horse vacation, this is the one!

And last week I won two hand-made bedside tables at a local library raffle ($50 worth of tickets - these are NICE tables!)

Edited to add: the Australia Trip was the first Animal Planet Sweepstakes run. It was a popup when I was on the computer, so I said "what the heck," and entered my name, addy, etc. Over 1 million people entered, and you could enter everyday for one month. I entered once. Talk about luck!!!!

Okay, let's start with the biggies I can remember (hahaha!!):

a pack of 3 squash balls
2 holding-hands teddy bears
1 x $20 lottery win
FM movie soundtrack on vinyl

then there's lots of other records I used to win off our local radio station when I was young (this is way back in the days of vinyl so that should give you all some idea of just how long ago it is...)

and a couple of small winnings on various lotto draws, no one prize over $50.

I still buy lotto tickets when the prize gets big, sometimes I buy a scratchie but for the most part I'm not pinning any high hopes of winning big :)

Nov. 26, 2009, 03:41 PM
I want that Australia trip!

Nov. 26, 2009, 03:54 PM
I won a very, very expensive gift certificate to a resort once and another time I won an overnight at a fancy hotel.

The first one, I took the 10 lowest paid people at the co. to dinner and blew the whole thing in one meal, the second one, I gave to a very low paid office assistant who had worked for the company for 30 yrs and had a rotten job and no money for such a ritzy weekend.

Best I've done is a P90X t-shirt signed by Tony Horton and a free Tony Horton workout. As silly as it seems, I LOVE them. The DVD is a killer called "Upper Body Massacre." It's aptly named and fit it into my workout regimine as often as I can.

If I've said it once, I've said it 100 times: I don't win anything. Ever. Mum won $5 on a scratch-and-win once and gave it to me when I was 12, then she convinced me to get 5 more tickets, they all lost, and I haven't won anything since then.

However, I have had relative luck in the vehicle department:

1. After a full summer's hauling 6-15 hours each way for competitions, my truck's rotors all gave out 1 mile from my barn on the gravel road. (No trailer attached.)

2. Mum and I hauled through a canyon to a competition, dropped off the horse, unhitched and went shopping. Transmission gave out in the middle of an intersection. No crashes. Had the weekend to fix it while I competed.

3. Hauled my horse 4 days over 3 big mountain passes. Arrived at destination, unhitched, went for breakfast next morning - no brakes. Brake line had quit. This happened in the IHOP parking lot, after braking for 3 lights.

Mostly little things--I'm pretty generous about buying raffle tickets, so the law of averages usually nets me a few things here and there. I can think of the portable CD player, gift certificates, a couple of baskets of "stuff", and once a really cool glass sculpture of a goddess that is sitting in my little flower garden. :)

My son loves scratch-off lottery tickets and won $75 the 2nd or 3rd time we bought him one--probably why he likes them! Whenever we're in NJ we buy him some NY Giants scratch-offs, those are the BEST as far as he's concerned. Cheap thrills. :p

I have never won anything, until last year, when a local lady was selling tickets for her church for a beautiful quilt.

What you know, I won it.

Nov. 26, 2009, 07:41 PM
I have won a few thousand a few times in Lotto.

A few weeks ago I WON runner up in a writing contest - that was great! The story I wrote was read live on WGN radio Chicago by their talent.

Hats and such from Nestles, Frito's, etc

I am a bit of a contest person - I always believe i will win the HGTV dream home THIS year - :D

I am another of those....."couldn't win if there were more prizes than people" people.

I am forever the only person at the table at showers and other occasions that doesn't get a prize.

One year the local grain elevator had a big night with guest speakers etc. Terrible weather. Only 36 people showed up. They had 35 door prizes in expectation of a large crowd. Wanna guess who didn't win anything???

One year a coworker and I each won a prize at an office event. He was a total cellar-dweller sports hating computer geek. He got four hockey tickets. I'm middle aged, female, and don't have a television. I won the X-Box console. He sidled up to me and asked if I might consider trading. I had no use for either the hockey tickets or the X-Box, so it didn't really matter which one went home with me. I was just going to regift the item at the family Yankee swap. Alas for him, he had been a bastard to me all year. I took home the X-box.

My work has basket auctions for "Make a Wish" where individuals or groups at work create a basket to be raffled off. There was one "basket" that was actually contained in a really nice footlocker. I won it and was the envy of all my co-workers. It was filled with bottles of liquor and top shelf at that! So not only did I get the benefit of the alcohol , I also acquired a nice "tack trunk"

That was the only cool thing that I have ever won and I have nothing to show for it now, like 7 years later. I am still hopeful about winning the Powerball though!

Nov. 27, 2009, 02:17 AM
I won a Klimke dressage saddle.

Nov. 27, 2009, 02:34 AM
I love entering contests, though I find the lottery baffling. I've never won anything big. Movie tickets, amusement park tickets, a DVD, nail polish. I quite like entering raffles, but never win.

I used my lifetime allotment of luck (probably several lifetimes) in an 18 month span in my early twenties. I won:
- A custom built, top of the line desktop PC
- $100 on scratch off lotto tickets. Three times. $40 on scratch off tickets twice. One or two dollars on scratch off tickets several times.
- A Parakeet and supplies for said parakeet.
- A $500 shopping spree at a big department store
- An all expenses paid trip to the Tibetan Freedom Festival in Chicago, complete with VIP passes and back stage access, free room service in my suite in the hotel, and 'the full treatment' in their spa.

I was star kissed for those brief moments. Why it didn't occur to me to exploit my good fortune wisely- by, say, buying a REAL lotto ticket instead of a scratch off one- I don't know. The stupidity of youth, I guess.

I won a walk on part to the Music Man on Broadway.

No kidding. It was an amazing experience to be on stage on Broadway, full costume, etc, etc. Loved every second of it.

Random event, too. I was buying tickets for a friend's birthday and I registered at the Music Man website. Got the call, got to be on stage, and four of my best friends got free tickets. Win included limo to and from the city, free dinner and a night in NYC.

$500 in a package of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and my best win was a trip to Palm Springs for hubby and I, with some entries that I mailed in eons ago ...

And $100.00 in a Cash for Cancer lottery that I entered as well

Its funny. My sister said that she still remembers this coconut Easter Bunny cake I won at a Church bazaar back when I was like 10 years old and she was like 6 or 7. She was so jealous as she wanted to win that cake so badly and I did instead!

I won $500 on a scratch about 5 years ago. And I won a basket of shampoo products from the salon I go to. I still play the mega millions hoping for that big, big win!

Hmm...the two things that come to mind are a filet mignon from the local grocery and a complete set of interlocking stall mats, enough to do a 12'x12' stall.
ETA I forgot, I also won a couple of free tune and test days at the track over the years, normally a couple hundred bucks a pop.

Nov. 27, 2009, 10:14 AM
I won one of those world's cheapest english saddles back when I was a young teen in a raffle from a local tack shop.
And I was thrilled...even if it was crappy and cheap. Didn't matter, I won it! :D
However I did not donate it to world peas or anything.

Won a can of fly spray once when I was a kid.

As an adult: Let's Make A Deal on TV but I didn't win the big deal. I went as a salad, 'Lettuce Make a Deal.' Won a silver tea set, some kitchen appliances, etc. My friend that forced me to go went back later and won the big deal, including expensive (and ugly) jewelry and a trip to Korea.

Went on a cable TV game show that was beamed into... dozens of homes. We won the big deal which was a cement-colored three bladed ceiling fan, a set of nesting parson's tables similar to those sold at the drug store, and an all-expenses paid trip (except for transportation) for two (format was three-man teams) to San Diego. Living in LA, this was not a huge thing.

We also won $1,000 cash which was nearly enough to pay the taxes on our winnings.

But it was lots of fun with former hubby and former brother in law. It was a quiz show format, and between the three of us, we had all the answers to their very offbeat questions... as we were a little offbeat too!

I won a pair of tickets to the WEG 2010 with a raffle ticket someone gave me.
(will trade one for housing wink wink )
This is the only thing I have ever won.
