Anyone ever use kids Benadryl to treat hives in horses?

My vet told me to do this but her phone was breaking up and I couldn't quite make out if it was 12 or 20mls to give every 8 hours.

Anyone?

I've used adult Benadryl for insect allergies. My 1000lb gelding gets about 20 pills at a time, 25mg pills. That would be 525mg total.

Hmmm... if a child requires 5ml, how much would a 16.1hh+ horse need? :D

Good question. I didn't think to ask when I was talking to my vet. I would imagine she would have said if it does.

I have used Benedryl tablets for my horse that gets itchy in the summer. I use the regular over the counter adult tablets, and he will eat the tablets whole in his feed. Does not seem to notice them. I will have to answer the dosage question later! I give him about nine of them (he is about 1150 pounds), but the bottle is at the barn and I can't remember how many mg per tablet.

I fed them pm and did not notice any difference in behaviour riding the next day, other than he seemed happier not being so itchy.

Doesn't make any of mine sleepy.

I use the adult Benadryl for my guys. Normally, I give 25 mg per 100 pounds of body weight, and that seems to do the trick. For really bad outbreaks, I will give more. I never give more than 50 mg per 100 pounds of bodyweight and I think I've only had to give that much once.

My 800# Arab never had a problem with 20 (25mg) caps 2X/day for hives. Benadryl works pretty well for hives but you have to use enough. Check with your vet.

I have used it for horses and ponies and cats - does not make any of mine "sleepy" just gives them relief ! Good Luck !

250 mg would be an average dose for a 1000 lb horse.

The regular generic ( diphenhydramine) tablets are pretty flavorless and mix into bran mash or beet pulp just fine.

You do not have to use syrup , just crush and dissolve the tablets in water.

I usually only need one dose, sometimes two. I think it does make my horse a little sleepy and it is, of course, not show legal.

Does Benadryl make the horse sleepy?

One of our pony club members gave Benadryl to her horse when he developed hives at camp (per vet's phone advice); the next morning he was very "dull" (groggy).

I have used benedryl for my horses hives. It doesn't make him sleepy at all, actually makes him hyper. He is a strange on tho. I know several dogs that are given benedryl as a sedative for traveling/boarding/etc.

like any drug that has a sedating side effect, ( even anesthetics) some horses will react with a hyper / aggitated reaction. It is always important to "test drive"

My horse is so laid back it is challenging to tell. I usually have to go with how he breaths and how loose his nostrils get. He flutters more when sedated. The benadryl does not make much of a sedation impact, comapred to an Ace dose. Even half Ace he is a cream puff.
