My friend had been making monthly payments to the IRS as agreed between her and the IRS. Well they decided they wanted all their money now. They emptied out her bank account without even a word. Bank called her today at work because her checks were bouncing and this was not something she ever did. Can you believe that! Thank God her cousin called her today becuase he woke up thinking about her and felt something was wrong, he is going to front her the money she needs to get by. Crazy thing is this happened a couple of weeks to her daycare provider. Watch out folks they are collecting up this month.

Thanks for the heads-up! I'm making monthly payments to the IRS. Scary.

The payment agreement is a contract on both ends. If she missed a payment by a day, they are within their rights. If she did not, lawyer immediately. They aren't allowed to violate the contract any more than she is.

And make sure she reads the fine print on her payment agreement. It's entirely possible that this was in the fine print. It really sucks for her, but it might be above the table.
At least in theory, most creditors can do this to you. It's in most of our mortgages too.

No doubt there are some heavy-handed tactics, but I wonder how people get so behind on their taxes?
Seems like (and I realize the sample audience might be VERY skewed) every other ad you hear on ESPN radio is for "tax relief" for "honest taxpayers who get in trouble with the IRS". How is it possible to go $100,000 in tax debt honestly? Do people not realize they have to pay taxes at some point or other?
I think of it as rent--the fee I pay for getting to live here. I've never owed the IRS a penny, ever, even when my base income was $7000/year.

A lot of people are stupid about the details ... things like setting up their withholding correctly or computing and paying their quarterly estimates correctly.
I do not regard the IRS as evil .... but they are very ruthless about following the letter of the law. Pay attention and play by their rules and things roll along smoothly. Get crossways to them and life is far less pleasant.

They took $1700 which is not alot unless your living pyck to pyck then it might as well be a million. They always did automatic debit so they were never late it just seems they decided it was time to pay in full. I'm sure they did not read the fine print I don't know to many people who do read the fine print. They probally did a poor job in computing their withholdings and that is why they were paying. They had a rough year with her husband being out of work for a year because of medical reasons this is just the icing on the cake.

Penalties rack up quickly if you get behind, from what I understand. I know someone who's (now ex) wife who was supposed to be doing the books for his business, and instead pocketing money... she didn't pay the taxes for a year or two, and with penalties, he ended up owing the IRS 120k...

I remember having the IRS come after me one year. I moved state to state for a few years galloping horses so taxes were interesting to say the least. One year they got it in their heads I should be paying California tax because I had lived there previously and my bosses company address was there.
As I was young and dumb, I ignored the letters. Next thing I know my paycheck was cut in half! Then started the long and drawn out process of proving I shouldn't have to pay. Mind you they still took money out of my check every week.
It took about 2 months total and guess what? The guy says to me they were satisfied I didn't owe the money and the case was closed. UMM CASE IS NOT CLOSED - I want my money back. That actually took another 3 months if you can believe it.
Lesson learned and thankfully it wasn't too painful.

They're only ruthless so long as you aren't a member of our house of representatives or senate. Then they obligingly turn a blind eye. Sigh

Or nominated to be Secretary of the Treasury. You'd think he'd have more sympathy for people with tax problems. But then taxes are for the little people...
