Horse had a trailer loading accident, bashed her eye badly. Got tired of local treatment, took it to good vet. Ultrasound of her eye shows smashed retina and ruptured iris. She is totally blind in that eye now.

The owner wants to try to "save the eye". From what I have researched, it would be better to enucleate as soon as possible??

Any of you who have had it done, wish you had not done it, or had done it sooner?

I had it done on my blind mare who had glaucoma as a result of ERU. She was very uncomfortable and she seemed better immediately! Her other eye is shrunken and also totally blind, but I have not had it removed because it doesn't bother her.

If the eye is not causing any problems and isn't expected to get worse, I'd leave it alone. If it's 'making trouble', I'd remove it ASAP. As I stated, my mare is totally blind. She had the surgery in my vet's clinic's backyard and it went smoothly. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I'd be happy to talk to you about our experience. Good luck!
