So, one of our wonderful schoolies twisted his shoe and buried the clip into the white line of his foot.:( Happened Thursday, horse is still off today (Tuesday). Farrier pulled the shoe and checked with the hoof testers and said no abscess, but probably a bad bruise.

What are your favorite remedies for a sore, bruised foot? Soaking in warm water/epsom salt? A friend suggested an iodine/sugar pack? What say you?

I like an epsom salt paste or ichthammol pack for a few days.

My horse did this EXACT SAME thing about a month ago. I soaked it everyday and packed it with idodine and sugar for 3 days, then with ichthamol for about a week. We also had him on some antibiotics, because I think dirt got in the wound when I was walking him back from his stupidity. He was DEAD lame for the first 3 days (like walking on 3 legs), then progressively got a little better. He was 100% in about 2 weeks

My favorite is Sore No More "the sauce", which is Sore No More mixed with sugar to make a paste, slather the bottom of their hoof with it, add a diaper, tape. Works great!

With this particular situation I would forge a bubble in the foot side of the shoe in the area of the injury. This makes a place to pack icthimol or epson salt paste between the sole and the shoe and hold it there with cotton packing. Also provides the foot with protection and support while at the same time making it very easy to change the poultice.

I would discourage soaking because it softens the entire foot - which is never a good thing. IMO, foot soaking should be "illegal" whenever a local direct-poultice option is available.

I agree, no soaking, pack with epsom salt or your favorite.

This must be a new trend! I never heard of it before until my mare did it in August! Three weeks of recovery with her since the initial wound - even though I soaked and poulticed and wrapped etc. - turned into an abcess after all. Then we had x-rays, soaks, poultices, hand walking for several days before she could go back out. Then to top it all off, she went out in turnout with an Easy Boot on that foot and managed to rub her heel raw. My vet came out and said to just stop everything (no soak, no wrap, no poultice, no boots) and put Ms. Thing in her stall.

What fun we had! Good luck with your guy. I wish you a speedy and uneventful recovery!
