Dairyland Greyhound Racetrack in Kenosha, Wisconsin will be closing on December 31, 2009. 900 Greyhounds need to be adopted or they will be euthanized. Please help me get the word out; there is only 6 weeks to get this task done. Contact Joanne Kehoe Operations Director P: 312.559.0887 Or Dairyland Race Track Adoption Center direct at (262) 612-8256

Word is this is not entirely true. There could be 900, but may be more like 500. All Greyhound rescues in the 5 state area are preparing for a large influx from Dairyland. These groups will not let healthy greyhounds be euthanized. I'm sure these rescues are looking for help in terms of funds and eventually homes, but they also don't want track hounds placed directly in homes without Greyhound knowledge, they put them in foster to acclimate to house life first. BUT... if anyone's ever thought of adopting a Greyhound-there will be plenty to go around!

I hope they can find homes for these dogs. I adopted one
from our local rescue group and she is the best dog I have
ever known. Absolutely wonderful!

#1 Yes greyhounds are excellent pups and need help on a daily basis
#2 PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE check your facts before FWDing these "sky is falling" emails.
There are 500 dogs TOTAL at that track. Just as an FYI, there are currently 200 retired dogs on the "waiting for a group" list alone in Daytona Beach (one of the many, many tracks in Florida). Also, Raynham is closing in January. While this is a challenge, it is no more a challenge than Florida is every day and no more challenging than the next few years will be as more tracks close in this economy. A lot of dogs will get moved to Florida tracks, too, backing up down there. This is why we keep pulling dogs out of there whenever we can.
In order to be able to take greyhounds from a track in Wisconsin, an adoption group or shelter must be registered and approved by the State of Wisconsin, Division of Gaming, so we couldn't take any even if we wanted to.
The groups in Wisconsin are working this. If you would like to make a donation to them (food, shelter, etc), feel free.

I can recommend an EXCELLENT group who will adopt to MD. Greyt Expectations Greyhound Rescue, small group but doesn't have any of the normal rescue BS. Also a very internet savvy group. :)

Is Wisconsin a "no kill" state?

Not sure if WI is a no kill state... Latest is that Dairlyland will stay open until all dogs find places to go.

There are MANY of us out here that would love to do a adoption of a Greyhound. But why is it so darn hard to get approved.
I am a professional Adult. with ample space in my home. I am a loving and caring person of all animals .And most of ALL I can afford all the medical or personal expenses of owning another dog.
BUT many of these Rescues will NOT adopt out of State.:o
THIS is so frustrating to me ???????
any one care to chime in here ?????????????

There are hundred of different rescue groups out there. You just need to find one that works for you. GEGR is headquartered in Lusby MD, and adopted to us in DE. Their main focus is to make sure that everyone who wants a hound to spoil rotten has the option to get one. They also have dogs in GA, CA, and AZ but I think they might have moved after adopting?? Not 100% sure

Also you can always bypass the rescue groups and adopt straight from the race owners. I know tons of people who have been burned by rescue drama that do this. Or you can preadopt and follow your hounds racing career! I hope to do this one day I think it would be fun!

Hey Crazyhorsegirl!
Ya know distance should not be an issue, there are pet transports all the time and if you wanted to move a dog just check out the Yahoo groups for pets, I have one just for pet transports and I have people emailing me all the time when they are setting up a transport. I'm sure there are Greyhound specific transports also. And as this crazy girl told me, they are couch potatoes so they should travel well, just sleep in the back seat. :sleepy:
