New to dressage saddle shopping and for my one pony the saddlefitter said to stay away from German brands as she needs short tree points. He said to look for English brands or Wintecs and Bates. I'm more familiar with the German brands, can someone enlighten me as to what some of the English brands are or if you know of any other brands with shorter tree points?

English brands that I can think of off the top of my head...Albion, Ashley & Clarke, Patrick Saddlery, Classic Saddlery, Ideal Saddlery, Thorowgood...Oh, and Black Country.

I can't speak to what the points are like on any of those, however. I ride in a German made Sommer Magnus.

an English brand I really like is called Moritz, harder to find, but the saddles are nice, as are their other leather goods.

Cardanel is another brand you might want to look into.

Wintec is pretty low end in terms of quality.

Fieldhouse, Jeffries, Sue Carson and my favourite Barnsby are all decent ones.

Does anyone know if Whippy is still around?

Barnsby....made by Walsall saddlers. Very good quality, and their trees are (all?) made with half-points instead of full points for shoulder clearance. Still have to get the right width and angles but in general they will fit a lot of horses successfully.

Lovatt & Ricketts saddles are great for wider, shorter-backed horses. They're made in England. I have the Ellipse and really like it.

I have a Ryder (Legacy) and really like it - not quite as much as my Verhan Odessy, but it's a really nice saddle.

Barnsby saddles have very short points, and the trees can be adjusted to pretty much any angle. I had one taken from XXW to MW.

They are very nice saddle otherwise too. Nice leather, lovely stitching, and they use a synthetic flocking that won't clump like wool can. The seat on the one I had was very comfy for long trail rides, too.

Thanks, that's what I have, a short backed mare that needs an extra wide tree.

Jeremy Rudge is another English saddler. I have one and quite like it, although it doesn't fit my new horse

Ridgemount Saddlery in Canada works with a couple of the better British manufacturers:

Custom-made and off-the-peg.

Another Cliff Barsnby fan. I have three different dressage models - all great saddles and great for the wide horses that need shorter points. They all have a bit longer flap than average so are good for taller folks. One is a little small for me so it's for sale (17XW AVG - wink wink).

I'm not sure all models are truly adjustable. I think certain ones are and others aren't.

I had a Frank Baines Reflex and while it was a very nice saddle and fit my widest horse well, I had to sell because I couldn't sit in it.

I have a Barrie Swain Freedom Holistic for my DraftX who needs short points. I love the saddle.
