Wooly Wintertime

Last night I went to the barn (I feed nights, a fellow 'boarder' feeds mornings.) My horse has only been there a week and the girl who does mornings asked if it was ok to leave the halter on in the stall for the first few weeks. It's a breakaway so I figured it would be ok. In this area, its common to have chickenwire on the tops of stall doors. I usually never turn the snap in on my halters (my old horse was too sensitive and would rub). So I didnt this time.
The girl who fed called me and said that my new horse was stuck to the chixkenwire by his halter, the snap to be exact. I was pretty horrified, thankfully he didnt injure himself or anyone else (good boy!). My question is, how many of you turn the snaps in? I havent except on blankets. I am thinking I may just get a leather turnout halter with no throatlatch snap now, and we replaced the chickenwire in my stall with some fine mesh looking stuff.
It seems they will always manage to find a way to hurt themselves or give us high blood pressure!
