View Full Version : If I have a bunch of pins in my leg...

will they be more likely to move and start to want to come out if I start back jogging? I fell off a horse a couple years ago, shattered my leg but I feel great now and the next level of soundness would be getting back to jogging condition so I can get good and fit again. I don't want to make them more likely to shift around and get loose though, I'd like for them to stay in for the long haul if possible. I am wondering how the concussion will affect them.

I have had a pin in my ankle for about 8 years now with no problems. I run, I ride, no big deal.

I think my gait is a bit off, but no soundness problems.

nope, they should be fine (although if they bother you it usually isn't any big deal to have the hardware removed-once the bone is healed the hardware is usually superfluous)

I have some plates and screws in my palpating arm that I'm going to have removed soon because they're really close to the surface and I can feel the tendons clicking over them sometimes and it is very distracting when my arm is you know where

I had to have the plate and 8 screws removed from my ulna. The ulna is so close to the surface anyway that anytime I put my arm down on something I hit the pins and it was pretty bad. When I asked if the plate and pins could come out, they took x-rays to check on the condition of the bone and found out it was demineralizing because it was depending on the plate. Out it came!!

The plate and pins are still in the radius, 8 years later, with no problems.

K. I wasn't sure if the concussion from running (not especially gracefully, I am sure ;) would make them more likely to shift or come loose.

I've pins and plates in my lower leg and ankle. Been in for about 15 years.

I've still very active. Don't job but I do walk about 10 miles minimum each and every day! And I ride a lot still.

Only problem I really have is a little discomfort when it's very cold and I struggle to find boots that don't rub my ankle sore where there's a screw head just beneath the skin surface.

You might have better luck asking on a running forum, such as runnersworld.com or something.

Instead of jogging, why not just brisk walking? That is also good for general fitness, and does not have the amount of concussion involved in jogging.

TheJenners - genius, why did I not think of that?

I only did, because I belong to it. I've unfortunately retired from any kind of serious running because of the pain that even PT didn't fix. I tore my quad and kept running, then while at the police academy I tore my solieus and got a shin splint and kept running...now I'm paying for it. Adrenaline can fuel a sprint after someone, and I can pass the 1.5 req., but that's it. Very sad after running half-mary distances at a 7:30 pace for years :(.

Some good input for the OP, and as this isn't horse-related, we're going to close the thread.

Thanks!
