I'm normally a lurker, but hope it's ok to emerge from my hole to ask for jingles for my gelding...sorry if this is long.

He's my 17 hh chestnut TB mush. Just a big love of a horse. Last Tuesday I got a phone call from my barn manager (who is also a vet's assistant) that my boy was lame and his left front was swollen. She had found a small puncture just below his knee, treated it and all seemed well. For the past week I've been treating the wound, scrubbing, coating with ointment and wrapping the leg on a nightly basis. The wound appears to be healing well to date.

I brought him in Sunday night, unwrapped the leg and, during the process of cleaning the wound, noticing some swelling in the tendon. After placing a call to my barn manager, I wrapped the leg and said goodnight.

I returned to the barn tonight to check out my boy's leg and find out my BM's opinion on the tendon. By the time I arrive, she's unwrapped the leg and checked everything out. I walk into his stall to find a knee the size of a small cantelope and a horse that is 3 legged lame and reluctant to move.

After a quick consultation with the BM, a vet visit is scheduled for tomorrow morning where x-rays will be taken and the future of my dear sweet boy discussed. Needless to say, I'm heartbroken by this injury. I hate to see the pain he's in trying to walk around. I'm so hoping it's nothing serious, but none the less there's sure to be a long recovery period. He's made so much progress recently. This is the boy that won year end reserve champion in 2 of our local show series having never shown before. He has so much ahead of him and I hate to see potential threatened like this.

So could I get some jingles for my boy? I'd really appreciate it

Isn't amazing how horses can make you worry so much one moment and then make you look foolish the next?

So, drove out to the barn this morning to meet up with my vet after a sleepless night of worry. Arrive to find the vet already there. He had pulled Watson out of the stall and unwrapped the leg to get a better look at things. I walk around the corner of the grooming stall to find my boy looking bright-eyed and bushy tailed, standing square on all four legs and his knee having lost the look of a small melon. Still definitely swelling present, but nothing to the extent of last night. Vet palpates the leg and knee and tells me that he's going to put Watson on antibiotics, but sees no point in x-rays at this point. He also states that he thinks that the infection has moved around the knee but hasn't penetrated the joint capsule. Insert huge sigh of relief from me. So, basically, vet's orders are to keep it clean, keep it wrapped, give him antibiotic injections daily, 2 grams of bute to keep him comfortable and he should be better here soon. Insert another huge sigh of relief from me.

So, vet leaves, I re-wrap the leg and turn to lead him back to his stall and darn it if that horse didn't walk off almost sound. He must've been milking the "Oh mom, I hurt so much" last night for all it was worth with his toe-dragging limp.

So thank you for the jingles! Another COTH miracle :) Last night I was fearing the worst. Today, I wanna smack him for making me worry so much. Honestly. Well....back to trying to stay awake at work after a night of NO sleep (thank you very much Watson) and thanks again for the support!

He's been the best patient, which is probably a good thing given the size of him lol. He doesn't budge when I'm bent down scrubbing on his leg cleaning out the wound. All he does is lift his leg and let it hang in mid air.

He seriously pouts whenever I give him his bute paste. He stands with his nose in the corner and won't turn around to talk to me. I offer him treats and he lips them and sniffs them, but won't take them. I put them in his feed tub and he pushes them around with his nose til he either flings them out of the tub or crushes them to a point where he's satisfied I haven't added anything.

And for a ex-racehorse, he's the laziest creature I've ever met. He falls asleep while I'm grooming him, letting the crossties hold him up. I literally have to bop him in the nose sometimes to wake him up lol. I do love this horse :) I often wonder how they got him to finish a race, much less win 4 of them.:)
