I have a horse that has an interesting foot story.. now is lame RH.

Purchased knowing it had bad farrier work for the past 3 years or so...feet were a mess. Put some front shoes on. Grew a lot of foot, farrier came out to reset the front shoes. Put a hot nail in. Came back in a couple days and pulled the nail. Horse was better right front. Jogged the next day and it was lame right hind.

The right hind lameness presented as a stabbing the ground. short stride, hip reaching up and a stab. Gave a few days rest and had the farrier check the hoof testers. Couldn't really get much of a reaction. Put in a stall and wrapped the leg (no sign of heat or swelling, no obvious pulse) and soaked the foot just in case. Couple days later (4) lameness was not visable. Rode her yesterday, basic w/t/c and the horse slipped once. Longed briefly today to check and the lameness is back, though not as bad as before. Clearly worse on a right circle than left circle.

She hasn't preferred one canter over the other, not cross cantering, nothing that would suggest back or SI.

I have no flexed her, nor have I called the vet (next step)

Any thoughts as to what sort of lameness causes the short stride and ground stabbing?

Hard to tell without seeing the horse move, but when I hear "stabbing" with a hind foot, I think hock.

Good luck. A vet's lameness exam is your best bet. Hope your horse is better soon.
