Hi all!

A friend of mine's horse developed some issues with a "sticky" hind end. The mare is almost 25yo and has never been on anything for joints. The vet came and took a look and recommended she try the injectible glucosamine, at a rate of 1 injection every week for 3 weeks, and then 1 injection every 3 weeks. According to everything I have found, this seems to be a better alternative to supplementing by mouth. Anyone have any experience with injectible glucosamine?

Thanks!

I used to use injectable glucosamine -- 10 ccs once a week every week for four weeks followed by 10ccs once a month for twelve months. It worked great. My horse no longer made audible clicking sounds in his hocks. It is way cheaper than most alternatives.

I've heard that if the horse already has "damage" glucosamine is unlikely to do much to remedy that, but it may be an excellent preventative.

Love it! It has made a huge difference in a couple of our horses off the track.

Made a tremendous difference in my guy, 5cc's weekly. 10y/o OTTB who was just stiff all over - no one joint giving him probs.

what doses are you using?....the 100mg/cc or the 200mg/cc? is it 10cc for the 100mg/cc or 10cc for the 200mg dose..thanks!

Honey, if you have never added any kind of joint supplement to this horse and, at 25 (that would be 76 to you and me), this mare merely has a "sticky hind end" you are way, way ahead of the game.

Good to know that some horses can still stay that sound, that long. Impressive!

I know several people who use Cetyl-D, which is injectible Glucosomine and like it. It's a lot less expensive than products such as Adequan but also generally less effective. My own vet doesn't recommend it on its own but says it can be useful when used in conjunction with another product (for example, inbetween shots of Adequan).

If you can give IM shots it's an easy thing to try.
