Vet has recommended lysine for my horse who was showing neurological signs of herpes. He's not interested in his feed this am, figure it must be the lysine? It's not a lot volume wise but it does have a distinct smell to it. If you feed lysine, do you have a problem with your horse eating it?

The smell of it varies with every container I've bought. One smelled kinda sweet, a couple have smelled fishy. 'Fishy' as in like fish, not spoiled (fish is high in lysine content actually). When I first started feeding it, I did have a couple turn their noses up at it. Start with 1/3 of a scoop over the first couple of days, then work up to 1/2 scoop, then 1 then so on. I find with any supplement they are less likely to turn their noses up if you start smaller.

what we did was melt it into a liquid and then the horses were very happy do eat it.

My horses are generally very picky and thankfully Lysine was undetected!

My mare gets lysine in her wet hay stretcher, and just slurps it up. She's very picky, but the hay stretcher seems to mask just about everything.

Yeah, I forgot to mention all of mine get soaked beet pulp so soaking might help.

I use the Vita Flex lysine. It smells kind of yeasty-not offensive at all.

I used human grade lysine for my cats ( and myself) they took it no issues. It had a slightly tart taste ( perhaps slightly acidic?) but no overwhelming flavor.
It dissolves very easily,

I use Vita Flex lysine too. Never had one that smelled yeasty though. Either sweet or like fish, and always a little bit different from the last batch.

Mine is vitaflex also, that's what the vet gave me. It does smell yeasty to me. I cut it back as someone suggested and he's eating it better, still not all but hopefully that will come. Are you guys using it to treat herpes?

I use it to help build toplines (works well on a few of mine).

Was using it as a supplement for poor protein hay/pasture to help with potbelly/topline.
Definitely helped.
Got Smartpaks and they offered at no additional charge to add flavor. We went with
alfalfa. No problems.

I've been feeding Lysine for 5-6 years to treat/prevent my horse's reocurring eye herpes. Kiwi gets 4 scoops daily. I don't think it does anything though...the herpes always comes back at least 1-2x a year. :sigh:

I take it myself for mouth sores. Sometimes they come back, but if I stop the lysine they're constant. So even though he is still getting the herpes sores a few times a year, without lysine it may be more frequent. Plus, it's a cheap supplement. I get the lysine for my horse from GP Direct. It lasts a long time.
