i have a new rescue in the barn. older teen gelding, with a deep, plush dappled cocoa coat. but his mane and tail are steel grey---like senior citizen grey!
the base of the mane is a little yellow-er, though he's also pretty filthy, so i'm not sure if that's his true color or if the mane turned grey as he aged.
is grey a common color for the chocolates' manes and tails?
i have a deep copper haffie with the typical flaxen mane and tail, the grey really threw me when i saw it up close.

oh yeah? he's pretty big for a shetland i think! 13'3 and very drafty--maybe a cross? plus he's got a big jughead, his head is kind of course looking overall--but his body is pretty haffie i think. do shetlands get that big?

hmm, his winter coat is a deeper, darker, dapple cocoa color, who knows how he'll shed out in a few months...
are there 13'3 drafty shetlands?

That was a summer coat on the pony, she did darken up a bit in winter. if you google silver dapple you will find lots that are a darker color. I do believe that other breeds display the silver dapple trait. I believe Welsh ponies are known to carry it. I'm no expert and can't verify this site's credibility but it shows a number of breeds come in silver dapple http://www.silverequine.com/breedswithsilver.htm
Here's another site http://www.horsecolor.com/dilutions/silver_dapple.htm

LOL Mollie!
I'm in the vote for Shetland, or Shetland cross...though it is highly possible it's a Welsh Cob or cross...
Looking forward to pictures!

Yes, silver dapple comes in other than Shetland; one of the smaller gaited breeds (Rocky Mountain?) is almost ENTIRELY silver dapple.Their color can change through the seasons; and over time. There is a simple, CHEAP test for silver dapple.LOTS of information on silver dapple on the web; in five minutes you can find out ALL you want to know.
