Re breeding in 2010 - I've been advised by the stallion owner to provide proof of Pneumabort-K (rhino) at least 7 days prior to shipping semen. I've always vaccinated at months 5, 7 and 9. Plus all of the other usual spring vaccinations.

The mare in question is coming off being open for 2009 but still up to date with all vaccinations. Anyone ever had this request before?

That is totally new to me. I can't imagine the reasoning behind such a recommendation.

Err....why? I'd ask specifically why they are requiring it as it really serves no purpose other than adding expense at that stage of the game.

Nope. Are you sure that they are requesting Pneumabort K or are they requesting that the mare be vaccinated for rhino. There are 5 alpha herpesviruses that infect horses (EHV-1, 2, 3, 4, 5), but EHV-1 and EHV-4 are the ones that cause serious clinical disease in horses. EHV-1 and 4 used to be considered subtypes of the same virus, but now are described as two different, but closely related ones. EHV-4 is the respiratory agent, although it has been known to cause abortion and neurologic disease. Likewise, EHV-1 is the reproductive disease that has been known to cause respiratory and neurologic disease. Just trying to clarify what exactly they may be asking for...

Hope that helps!

I can see them requiring immunizations, but why 7 days prior to shipping semen? Are they afraid the semen will catch cold when it meets your mare?
