Hello folks,

What is the best way, BESIDES dry cleaning, to clean Tailored Sportsman Breeches? Or is dry cleaning the only way? Can they be washed in the machine?
I would like to keep the pairs I have as long as possible in good condition.
Thank you.
Chris

I have put mine in the washing machine, with leather wash soap, and let them air dry. So far, that's worked OK.

I use cold water WOOLITE and hang on a line...not outside but inside the house. The sunlight can make the leather dry too quickly.
I have about 7 pairs VERY OLD and all in perfect condition. I have Never put an iron on them because they didn't have wrinkles if I got them out of the washer fast. Ive been doing this for almost 10 yrs. One pair of Pytchley(and that will be the last time I buy anything they sell) pants didn't do well with this. In fact the cloth part frayed. ALL and I mean ALL the Taylored Sportman's look brand new.....even after almost a decade of showing in them.SInce I show about 25 shows a yr....just think of the drycleaning bills I DIDN'T pay. I was screamed at by a bunch of people...including the trainers....for washing them myself.
It wasn't their nickle.:winkgrin::winkgrin::winkgrin::winkgrin::wi nkgrin:

The mods should really post the answer to this question as a sticky at the top given how often it gets asked  I've always found that my TS actually got cleaner washing them with Woolite on the gentle cycle (I turned mine inside out) and then hanging them up to dry than if I dry cleaned them. They held up just fine and I never had any problems with the knee patches.

I don't care for the way dry cleaning makes the leather knee patches stiff on my breeches, so I wash all of them at home, including the Tailored Sportsmans.

I turn them inside out, make sure any velcro tabs are closed, and just wash them - in cold water, regular cycle, with regular detergent. I hang them to dry (usually on my treadmill, LOL.)

I've never had a problem doing it this way and they've held up fine; I have several pairs that are really OLD, and they are still nice enough to show in.

I agree with the above posters. I put mine in the wash with melp or the stuff in the orange bottle and air dry them inside. I do give them a little press with the iron but it's not necessary. They have held help very well! Good luck.

i've often washed my tailored sportsmans and the only negative thing i noticed was that the color seemed to fade a little... not sure if this was bc of the washer or just bc they were old...

also, tailored sportsman makes breeches that are machine washable- they're cheaper, and in my opinion more comfortable.. i'd suggest looking into those too :)

to all who responded.
I was dreading the dry cleaning bill!
Glad to know I can toss them in machine with the rest of the laundry. I line dry all my 95% cotton breeches so this is a relief.

"I do give them a little press with the iron but it's not necessary"

Good to know....

"I was screamed at by a bunch of people...including the trainers....for washing them myself.

EXACTLY!
Thanks again!

Spent many years on the hunter circuit with my DD - gentle cycle, Woolite and air drying. She's still wearing them....

I'm another one who machine washes my Tailored Sportman's.
I do it on cold, gentle cycle with Woolite and let them hang to dry also. They are in great condition and I've done this about ten times.

Keep in mind, though, that the manufacturer recommends the way to clean something based on the fabric and research. If the color fades or the fabric is damaged in some way by dry cleaning a "dry clean only" garment, then you have recourse with the manufacturer. If you wash it yourself and it fades or the knee patches get messed up, then you are out of luck.
Also, the elastane (stretchy) part of the fabric can degrade quicker if not cleaned properly.
Washing machines vary in their effectiveness and TS are expensive, so be careful.
Personally, I love how sharp they look when they are dry cleaned and pressed!

I'm also of the school of thought of Woolite, cold water, gentle cycle, air dry inside the house. I've had my pairs for years and they still look and feel wonderful.

I've never tried to dry clean my TS, but I've heard more than a few people complain about shrinking after being dry-cleaned.

I stick all 2-way and 4-way TS' in the machine and the dryer... They come out much better then dry cleaning. Make sure velcro to velcro ... stinks when they get stuck to the pants!

I've had mine for about 4 years and washed them COUNTLESS times. Just stick 'em in the washing machine, regular detergent but no softner, and then let them hang up to dry. I second the suggestion of sticking velcro to velcro--this helps especially if you are washing other things like polo wraps and everything comes out in a gigantic ball if the velcros aren't fastened :)
