View Full Version : Leasing only for one show?

I've hit a road block as far as showing goes. All the horses in my barn are leased out and my trainer doesn't have any catch rides for me. So I was wondering...will people lease their horse out for only one or two shows? I really want to qualify for the local medal finals in April again(or at least show!) but I don't think I can afford a full-blown lease on a nice horse right now(I know they get pricier as the horses get nicer). And if someone was to let me use their horse for a show, how much would that typically cost me?

I would think $150 per day.
At least this is the number I would quote for my 3' Adult Amateur/Childrens Hunter.
I think that number is pretty standard.

I imagine it depends on where you are and what you want to do. Do you want to jump 2'6" or 3'6"? Here in the north east, we leased a 3' medal horse for a local one-day show for $200. We also leased a 3'6" horse and showed for two days at a three-day show for $500.
One way to cut costs is to share a horse with an adult who is showing at the same show. You both split the costs of shipping/stabling/braiding. The adult shows the horse in adult classes and you show in the junior classes. It can be a win/win situation, especially if the horse needs to get into the ring to feel more comfortable.

I hope you can find a nice horse I got a ride with no charge for a few finals even USET and we did very well one year. However I only placed my friend who won big final leased a horse for just two finals for 25K!! You never know what you might find or be offered don't be afraid to talk honestly with you trainer and ask around. Best of Luck :)

Leasing for one horse show definitely happens. When my horse was lame for two months this summer I leased a horse for one day to do 3'6" for $250 and another 3'6" horse for two days at $300 a day. It depends on the trainer and the horse you're looking for, but it's definitely possible for you to find something you like if you look around enough. Good luck!

Wow... show leases for $150-$500? This is a real shocker.
Over the summer, I paid $1,000-$2,000/per show for a 3'6" horse for my daughter at weekend shows. Do I assume correctly that I've been ripped off?

I think the cost is totally dependent upon the horse and your location, both factors have a lot to do with the price of the lease.

I was thinking that those lease fees were pretty cheap, but it also depends on the show, quality of horse, and the connections of the trainers.
There is a big difference in a horse that can jump 3'6" safely so you can participate and one that is going to give you a good shot at winning a final, and the prices usually reflect that.

I was shocked to the core to learn that a horse who is retired at my farm was leased out for a week at $30,000 to do a big show.....so out of my league it is almost funny!

It depends on the animal and the show. My small pony was leased out at WEF 2009 for close to that or more each weekend. So I don't think you can assume you were ripped off.
