View Full Version : Unstable...The T.V. show

What the heck is going on there?? I caught about 15 minutes of this T.V. show last night and it was like watching a bad slo mo train wreck! I assumed it was yet another bad horse themed TV show but it appears to be an actual barn? A reality show at Wendigo Farms in Ontario? I assumed it could not be a real barn but apparently it is????
Constant fighting on the part of the trainer, business partner and barn manager. Like a COTH thread come to life!
Anyone see it? Anyone know what they hope to accomplish with this? Other than scare away potential customers!

Oh my gosh..no, but they stole my idea. I just moved from a barn that was "unstable", lots of sorority drama with the BO, BM, and one of the workers....we often joked that they could make easy money if they brought a camera crew in and set up a reality TV show.....I thought the name of the show should be "THE UNSTABLE WOMEN OF XXXXX COUNTY"

Yes, it is a real barn! I taped it and I have not watched it, but even before the show was aired, after just seeing the trailer, there were so many things that were criticized!!
From the comments on this thread http://www.equiman.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=213869#Post213869, I doubt it will have a good impact on the barn!

It was on CMT (Country Music Television) last night at about 10:30. I suppose they are hoping to make money on the TV show instead of actual horse business as I assume anyone who saw the show would give them a wide berth! Yikes!

I will have to look for it, most horse TV shows keep my interest for about 2 minutes...As they get so dumb! Why don't they do a good one again like Horse Power..That is a positive spin on our world....From the sounds of it I hope not to many new horse people see this!

My 11 year old daughter shows ponies in A & AA shows and loves Horsepower! She has the DVD's and regularly watches it over & over on her computer. She and a friend from our barn had their picture made with Maggie McAlary, like she was famous. They were SO EXCITED! I wish they would do another season, but it probably has limited appeal to non-horsey people.

Unbelievable--the BM, BO and the "professional" seem to be clueless about running a business or taking care of horses. They don't investigate the condition of the outdoor arena before buying the place, jump without a helmet, leave gates open, turn out stallions next to mares and don't show up to feed/muck out until 11 in the morning.
I told my BO she had to watch it because it would put all her struggles and issues in perspective!

what an absolute crapfest.......didn't really show anything regarding horses, just the fighting between the "trainer (& I say that loosly), the seemingly spoilt co-owner & the "barn manager" (again said very very loosly).....supposidly this "barn manager" has worked for "Olympians", yet seems to have NO work ethic whatsoever! whines constantly, beotches when the "pro/trainer" (although there are NO clients) hires somebody to work with her and then calls the other coowner behind "pro/trainers" back....nope, not somewhere where I'd be keeping my horse, but quite the crapfest/trainwreck to pass away an hour with a martini in hand!!!

Yeah...I don't watch much t.v...and when I do, I make a point not to watch 'reality' shows. A college friend on my facebook sent me an invite to favorite the show, and to watch it. I clicked the nay button (my facebook is set to pirate) and forgot about it...until recently when, with some digging I realized she's become the new barn manager... :o
Friend is an awesome person, super hard worker and a great rider - so I really hope this show doesn't harm her reputation or anything. I haven't seen it, and really don't want to by the previews...but I'm hoping for the best for college buddy though.

I understand that the production costs were at least in part financed by the Goutals, so unless another parent is willing to underwrite the costs of another season, it probably won't happen.

Interesting. Maybe Steven Speilberg could do it. I'm sure he has the connections & money to make it happen. But I don't think his daughter is riding in the Big Eq yet because she is still fairly young. But maybe there's a chance. If my daughter thought it would help she would write a letter to him.

I would write a letter to him! Horsepower was a wonderful show, and not only did it help my non-horsie friends to understand what I do, it was really inspiring for me as a rider and kid - it still it. Whenever I watch I get a confidence boost and feel very detirminated to become the best rider that I can. I go on youtube and watch clips of it whenever I'm in a bit of a slump. It's also very useful for explain to boyfriends that no, I do not race horses.
By the time that Destry is in the BigEq the other riders her age will be, too (obviously), and there deffintaly some pony kids out there that we should be watching! It's why I love to watch the pony rings; you get a look at what the next mini-generation of riders are doing and can tell which ones really are serious about riding and have the talent to go far. I hope you know what I mean by mini-generation... For example, the kids that are around 8 or so now are still in the same generation as me, me being 14, but are a mini-generation behind me. And the "college kids" at my barn, that are now 20 or so are in the same generation as me, but are one mini-generation in front of me. Does that make any sense to anyone other than myself?
But honestly, this TV show sound crazy! I took a look at the barn's website and it looks all glitz and glamour - like daddy's little girl got a horse farm when she grew up, you know? The graphics are much more pretty than they are professional, and so are the pictures: everybody looks all made up, not like real horse people.
I try to stay away from reality TV, especially of the equine variety. That's why Jockeys never did anything for me. It's more about the people than the riding or the horses. I'll admit that I did Paris Hilton's My New BFF, though. Onch was so adorable! Sorry, reverting back to horse related topics...

I watched it and my freakin jaw dropped because of the so called "pro" she is a spoiled brat man, her co-owner went to buy a horse for her daughter but had to break her promise to fix the outdoor ring. Snarky/spoiled "pro" told her the ring in mose important(even though they have a lovely indoor) and her daughter doesnt have to ride she can muck stalls and sit and watch mom and "pro" ride. Then "pro" goes on how she put more $$$ into it and worked harder( literally got mommy and daddy to fund her side....) and co-owner who works for her money must put even more into it(ya know forget kiddo's horse the barn is more important because princess pro wants a outdoor ring)

Hoy. I found this barn *before* I knew they had a reality show (some of you may have seen my "looking for a barn in Toronto" thread) and talked a little with the trainer, who seemed pretty stable (har har) via email.
Then I decided to snoop around and Google them and found this Unstable show.
Watched it last night.
Take it all with a grain of salt, "reality" shows are about 10% actual reality...
Haven't made any firm decisions on whether I'll go to this barn either way, still need to go out and tour it and all that, see if the trainer can teach a decent lesson or not, see the place for myself. (Well, off of TV.)
The barn manager worries me... she seems pretty incompetent. Who the heck wears flip flops bringing in and turning out horses??? The lack of helmets in the opening credits I can look past, since I'm guilty of not wearing one myself half the time (though always over fences) but flip flops and hooves do not mix. Neither does showing up at 10am to feed horses. Hmm....

Those involved must really live by the principle "bad publicity is better than no publicity" because it really, truly makes them look both nasty and incompetent. Especially the "barn manager" who just made me cringe. What Olympian did she work for? Honestly, I think I would have let her go by the afternoon. If these people are just acting at being nasty and incompetent for the sake of a TV show why aren't their friends staging interventions?

I had to watch this after reading everyone's comments...the drama seems petty and stupid, but they have some nice horses and the pro is a pretty good rider! They SAY it's not scripted, based on a write up I saw. Who knows... I have seen barns this bad! Anyways... full clips are on cmt.ca. Go to unstable and there's a tab that says episodes. Then you can choose episode one or two and they are in three parts each.
I think it's entertaining... although I'm hoping they get their stuff together. Maybe it'd be more professional with Megan gone? Megan tweeted to stay tuned for episodes 3 & 4 as they are "heartbreakers"... I'm guessing she leaves in one of these?

I'll admit...the show has me hooked and I'm just WAITING for the next episode HAHA. I, too, just enjoy anything that has horses on the tv for more than a few seconds....and JUMPERS at that!
And KateKat...I have to agree. I was actually quite suprised to see that the pro rider is really quite good. But if you check out their farm Web site, it lists all the people she's trained with. They also have a you tube page where she's riding quite a bit.
And getting the daughter a horse....wow, 10k? Why aren't they looking at basic horses for her to ride...on the youtube vids she is riding a sale horse and is VERY novice, so isn't really in need of a fancy horse. Besides, I thought in the one episode Tammy said she only had 5k to dedicate to her daughter....the other 5 was for the outdoor ring?
Anyway...I shamelessly admit, I enjoy this trash! The horses are nice ;)

Holy cow. I saw this thread right before the forums went off line (and were subsequently massacred apparently...) but I just finished watching episode three. Allie was verbally attacking her 'rival' on the course walk and both of them were going at it after the class. Also, if that 'potential' boarder ends up actually boarding there she's insane. They were SCREAMING at eachother right in front of her. This is without a doubt the biggest trainwreck I've seen!

The potential boarder is actually a friend of Allie's (the "pro"), Allie was at her wedding... and yes, they are facebooking/tweeting as if the show is in real time, which I find quite strange when clearly it was filmed in spring/summer. They don't even own the barn, they rent it.

I suspect that everything we see is being reenacted... maybe these scenarios happened, maybe they didn't, but the cameras and director are likely coming in after the fact and having these non-actors try to play out scenes. That's why it's so stilted and the timing always seems odd -- case in point, the bizarre scene where Megan's lungeing a horse and her boyfriend walks in. The whole sequence with the mare and foal also seemed so awkward... and none of it makes sense. Not the way to make good TV!

I think the show is fun, but it does seem fake. I mean the nonsense with the "rival" at the show. Who talks like that?? It's probably a friend and they thought it would make good tv.
Allie comes across as a spoiled rich brat. Mommy and Daddy pay for everything still?? If you are really running a business and trying to make money you are not going to buy supplies at the show, they are like double the price! Also if you read Allie's bio on the farm website, she is listed as a partner in Shadowgate (Jamie's farm), so why start another farm?? And her comment about Megan "just combed the horses hair" was really snotty, she is just as bad at name dropping in her bio. Seems like she didn't stay anywhere very long.
Megan looks like a loose cannon, she might have worked for good riders but so have a lot of people, it doesn't mean anything. I mean if YOU are hired as the barn manager and you just move the horses into a new place, it is YOUR job to check all the stalls and fencing before putting horses in them. Not to say a nail might be missed but she made it sound like it was the others fault the fencing wasn't checked. And why get upset at the hiring of another girl? 15 horses by yourself is a lot.
Tammy seems okay to me so far, but one minute she says it was her money she put in the farm and the next she is telling the others it was her boyfriends money. So which is it??
But I do like to watch :)

oh lordy I just watched Ep 3&4. The scene with Megan's BF made me want to cringe in embarassment for both of them! UGH
Also, the whole thing with the mare was really weird...I don't know squat about breeding but if she really was checking on the mare every 30 minutes, wouldn't she have been able to tell when she went into labor?
This show is so horrible...but I just can't stop watching!! AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!! Oh, and no offense to people in Canada at all, but I love the way they say "out" and "about" :)

There is no way this program is for real. It must be a mockumentary ALA Trailer Park Boys, another Canadian Mocumentary based in Martime Canada.

LOL! The show is actually based not far from Toronto (and very close to where I am), but your post made me laugh. The shows is getting tons of negative attention here (for obvious reasons! :D ). I don't think anyone is sure if that is what they intended or not. If they really do hope to have a "world class equestrian" operation and did the show to get their name out there, they are in trouble - their reputations are forever tarnished. If they just wanted their ten minutes of fame then they got it.

WOW, just watched the show, and I am hooked. I hate the Barn Manager Megan. She didn't wake up to take care of the foal. The other chick in the Barn, Jenna, where the hell was she? I hope these ladies can get their stuff together. However, the show offers alot of Entertainment. Keep it coming Wendigo!

Who thinks we should start taking bets to see how many fights happen for every X amount of minutes? Or how many times they fight in public/in front of potential clients?
Or, better yet, turn it into a drinking game..... ;)

Hello Superfreak2009,
I am digging the show. I would agree that much of the shows incidents that are bigger then what really happens in the industry, but lets face it, this stuff does happen. The show is bringing awareness to myself about the challenges my barn owner/manager deal with on a daily basis. I feel that people are taking this to seriously, and it is a tv show. Take it for what it is worth, NO? I have not seen or met the ppl on the show but I don't truly believe that they are like this in real life, but who knows. I am watching this program with an open mind and I believe it will draw new attention to the sport we love.

Either Tammy or Allie (can't remember which one) said Jenna had to go home that night to deal with family stuff.

I caught it the other night and watched maybe 1/2 hour and it was just plain awful and, what really irked me, was when the two women (the blonde and brunette) can't remember their names, were making fun of Megan's new boyfriend. Do these two women think they're God's gift to men? Give your heads a shake ladies. We can only hope they cancel this show and replace it with something more intelligent or at least have nicer/kinder main characters.:(

Hello Pirateer,
I couldn't agree more. I would have no interest in the show if there was no drama. I think that episode 4 showed the softer side of the ladies. I can't wait for the next show Thursday. I think if you watch this show with an open mind and take it for what it is worth, you will enjoy it. I have signed up to the Fan Club on facebook and the girls from the show take the time to respond to my questions. They actually seem very nice on facebook.

On the Canadian board, the one with the daughter said that they filmed 12 episodes, so I think the other 6 are airing in spring.

I was wondreing if anyone else has had the same problem as I have. I have been watching Unstable on the CMT site, and episode number 6 seems to be mixed up. Part 1 is a copy of part 3 and 2 seems to be 1, and 1 seems to be 3???
I don't want to miss any of the fun, does anyone know where I can see episode 6 in it's entirety? Whoever came up with the title was spot on!!

ok we are hooked, the girls and I have been sitting here all evening watching every episode!! I can't wait until there are more. A bit over dramatic?? sure but what reality TV isn't?? Clueless on how to actually RUN a boarding/breeding operation? YUP but man it is FUN to watch!! They will learn, it takes time and if I lived in Canada I would certainly check the place out I think in the long run they might just make it work!

I haven't seen it but this is a local barn, about 45 mins from me. From what I've heard I can't even imagine how hard they have been on their reputation as a new barn in the area.

This show is a trainwreck. I couldn't help but sit and watch all 6 episodes...very entertaining, these people are nuts. My husband (not a horse person at all) thinks it is hilarious--his perception of catty women boarders is like this show.

i watch it ever week.yeah its a real stable here in canada.the point of the show is that 3 partnered women try to buy a stable together and basiccly try to make it a big investment and well run h/j stable.of course in the middle of things theres drama of honesty between new staff and clients and disagreements between nthe 3 partners etc.its nquite fun to watch and am always waiting for the next episode.you can watch some episodes on cmt site and just search for unstable.it does go to show you that there is alot of drama in the horse world.big or small.

The scripting has gotten so awful now that I get squeamish watching it... but I keep watching for Jamie, who I'm pretty sure is the only unscripted one, and therefore freaking hilarious. "I don't really care about who's dating who, I just want my check."
