I am so confused about jacket sizing! In street clothes I take a medium in blouses, t shirts, sweaters, jackets. Of the three jackets I currently own, only one has size tags. It's a Barbour hacking jacket which I got on clearance from Sierra Trading Post. Since it's more high-end, I'm thinking the cut is more generous. Tag says size 14, and since I have an hourglass shape, I do wish the hip area was a bit more generous (that vent doesn't lay as nice as it could!).

This season I want to get a hunter green jacket for basseting. I'm looking on eBay and asking the sellers for measurements of hip and bust. But I'm so confused! Either they are measuring incorrectly, or the sizes are all over the place. How can a size 22 have a 35" bust?

Fortunately my Mom is an excellent tailor, and can help me make alterations. But if I get it too big it's almost impossible to recut the neck and collar area.

Any suggestions? Am I nuts or is the standardization of riding clothes even more bipolar than swimsuits and jeans?

The sizes are all over the place. Moreover, some are US sizes, some are UK sizes, and some are European sizes. I have blazers that are a size 6, and some that are a size 14. Go figure. Best bet is to get something that fits. Measure it in key spots, and ask the seller to do the same on the garment of interest.

Good luck!

You can try going by the manufacturer's measurements on their size charts. But don't be too literal about it. The manufacturer of the jacket I just ordered is the only entity on earth who believes I have a 44" chest.
