So, I realize Halloween is tomorrow, but I need some help! We were to have a halloween party at the barn so I got together a great costume for my TB mare as a witch. Then, yesterday, I found out that we have to be able to ride them, in costume, in an equitation over fences class for fun. My witch costume has too many unsafe parts to ride in! Any suggestions on possible costumes??

Is the witch costume for the horse or for you? It should be easy to modify the witch costume for yourself, nice green face paint with a wart or three, long wig and pointy hat over the helmet (this is where your ugly schooling helmet comes in), bare arms with green face paint, large dark t-shirt with slashes and fringed bottom, dark breeches and your boots. If you can, make some great big fake buckles for the boots.
Now, horse-wise, I am at a loss, unless you make her up as a race horse - they're filming Secretariat right now, if she's chestnut can you make up a blinder hood in the blue and white checkerboard? T-shirt material and a blue felt pen will get you the bare basic, and a checkerboard t-shirt for you with white breeches.Dunno whether it'll be quicker to draw with felt pen or cut and use fabric tape. Can't remember the hat cover or his post position for the saddle cloth but I'm sure it's out there if you google it. Felt pens and pillowcases for that. If you're really lucky you might be able to get the real thing from a racing stable - heck, she could go as herself if she is OT.
What else that is quick - indian pony, maybe not PC anymore but simple. Tempera paint for hand prints, lightening bolts etc. Make some pinto markings.
Headless horseman might be too difficult, medieval princess and her destrier, that's something filmy for you and the conical hat with floating veil, plus some decor on the saddle pad and breastplate, maybe some geegaws on the bridle. Along the same lines a genie, think Barbara Eden.
Nazgul horse? Psychedelic horse? Using spray on hair color?

Hope you can come up with something easy and fun!

last year my friend turned her mare into a bumble bee. She took and old saddle pad and made a slipcover for it with yellow and black stripes. She also put yellow polos on. Then she got one of those antennae headbands from the costume shop and attached it to the crownpiece of her bridle with electrical tape. The she found cute little wings and attached them at the horse's withers right in front of the saddle (I think he saddle pad had to be pulled a little far forward and they were just pinned to the saddle pad). then she got one of those cone-shaped birthday party hats, painted it black, put some sparkles on it, and attached that to her mare's tail right up at the dock for a "stinger."

Then my friend dressed as a flower and they were extremely cute. I wish I had photos.

i think the scale of the little antennae, the tiny wings, and the fat mare was was adorable.

I always thought I could make my very dark bay mare a zebra, with some white paint :)

My daughter and her leopard POA pony went as clowns one year.
She wore a white with black polka dots clown suit and hat and a red clown nose and Imade the pony a matching neck ruffle and pointy hat and a clown nose stuck on his cavesson.
She used a white saddle pad with a black piping.
