This is a 2 year old colt by Gatsby o/o a TB mare. Not my horse, located in WA, Seattle area. Good hunter potential? I am a dressage person, so I'm not truly qualified to assess, but to me he looks like he has good, natural form (?). He is for sale. I am not marketing him for the owner, but I liked this picture. It was his first time ever free jumping.

I saw the one photo jumping. I don't much like him as a hunter but it is his first time jumping and he needs to learn to use himself and not prop at the jump and he might do okay.

Not a hunter from that picture. Maybe an eventer? They don't have to have much style, just get over cleanly.

Why is it that when a horse doesn't have good style, people automatically suggest it should be an eventer? Trust me, if I was sitting on a horse that didn't have good style with a tight front, there is NO way I would ever want to gallop it at a solid obstacle.

You can't judge a horse on its first time through a shoot by a photo. He might turn out to be a cute hunter. His jump could totally change with more training and a rider on his back. If you really wanted an opinion from one photo though, he doesn't look like much of a hunter (but that does not automatically make him an event horse!).

Could you guys specify what you mean specifically by style or lack of it? The reason I was asking about this particular horse was b/c the owner said he jumps everything and anything he can, out in the pasture, over the pasture fences, over the water troughs, etc., etc., and nothing seemingly stops him. So I showed the picture to a friend who does both hunters and jumpers, asking her about his jumping potential, and she thought he looked like a hunter, not a jumper. So now I'm thoroughly confused. Is it that subjective? Just curious and trying to educate myself. Thanks in advance...

I don't think you can judge based on one photo, the first time ever through a shoot. This photo is also taken a bit too early after takeoff. But generally you would want to see the knees up higher and a bit tighter (as well as even) and a bit more bascule (rounded back) over the jump. Video would be more helpful than a single still, also.
