According to USPS.com it would be 100.. but that doesnt seem right. I sold a saddle on ebay once before and I printed the lable out and it only cost 14, but I found out that was wrong and I just got lucky that it actually shipped. I am selling my wintec saddle (2000) with the gullets in the box too. Does anyone know around what this should ship for so i can go ahead and post it on ebay?

Hi I am just working on one now. I sold it on ebay, and for Parcel post, it calculated around 35.00 BUT, when I plugged in the numbers of my box on USPS.com, it gave me 107!!!
I will have to reconsider using the box I have, and get the dimensions a little smaller to make the rate I advertised. It might be a little more cramped in the box, but it will be packed properly.
get your box first, then weigh it with the saddle to make sure you have it right before you sell it. I don't want my saddle money going into postage!
usually that kind of saddle "should" go in a 20" cube. mine is a bit larger, and will be as close to that after I am done altering my box!
I sold one last year it was about 35, Priority, but it really depends on how far it's going too. I am shipping this one from NC to Ca and it's pretty heavy.

After the saddle search from hell, with many saddles shipped back and forth, I can tell you that $100 is waaaaay too high.

I mostly used UPS and the costs averaged between $35 to $50 for 3-day delivery. The thing with UPS is that you get a cheaper rate if you ship to a business, so I was getting saddles shipped to work for the savings. It also depends, I believe, on how far the package is traveling.

Hope this helps.

If you can, take the saddle to your local PO and to a UPS store to have it weighed and priced.

If you have a box at home and can pack it yourself, USPS can be as little as $15-20 (size of box matters so use the smallest you can fit the saddle into).

UPS will run more like $45 (less if you pack it yourself)

UPS is usually the cheapest when it comes to heavier, bulky stuff. It typically costs $30-$70 depending on where it is going.

This. I shipped back between 7 and 10 saddles over the summer and always went to the Post Office to ship them. Slow boat (5-6 days) it was about $15-20. I always packed them very well and did not have a single problem on the receiving end.

Agreed with this.
I did UPS and it was REALLY expensive. Saddle repair person I was shipping to said, no, pack it yourself, smallest box you can find, and take it to post office. She was right. Way cheaper.

If people had seen how USPS treats the package versus how UPS treats the package, they'd understand the cost difference. At UPS it is virtually hand-carried the whole way, even at WorldPort, which is why they charge you for dimensional weight (they only do this for bigger/unwieldy/special contents packages). USPS tosses your box around like a dodgeball. I've not yet had a USPS-shipped saddle arrive at my house damaged, but many of the boxes look like they've been to hell and back.

I'm not saying that one should automatically choose UPS, but there's a reason most of the tack stores that do LOTS of business in saddles choose UPS. One damaged saddle = more damage to their bottom line than an extra $30-$40 per saddle.

I've shipped a few saddles using UPS. It totally depends on the location and whether you plan to insure for the full value. I have paid anywhere from $40 (to ship from VA to PA) to $90 (to ship from VA to CA) using ground service with full insurance. I always pack myself - usually in a 20x20x20 box.

I just shipped my Collegiate through UPS and it was $31 to ship from MD to FL plus ~$11 for them to box it up and all.

You can get rates and times from UPS at http://www.ups.com
If you roll the flaps around the saddle and cover with bubble wrap you can get it in to a pretty small box.

I went through an extensive dressage saddle search this spring ended up mailing many saddles back and forth. If I had to buy the packing materials/box it usually ended up around 70-80.

UPS is way more expensive than USPS. I had to send a trial saddle back a few weeks ago. UPS wanted $160 to send it from DC to NY. Shipping + insurance through USPS was $18. If you know how much the saddle weighs and the box dimensions, yOu can go online, print up the shipping label and pay the postage, and schedule a pickup time for free.

I was going to ask if there was an anvil in the box, too!

UPS ground has been $40-$50 for me. The best idea is to put the saddle in a box with all the packing and then weigh it. Then you just go to ups.com and find out how much.

It's been a while since I shipped one, but FedEx was always the cheapest, and they include insurance. UPS charges an additional fee.

I've shipped/received quite a few saddles- english and western. Here is what I have found:

USPS is cheapest provided you can find a box within their dimension requirements. I can rountinly ship anywhere in the US with $1000 insurance added for under $35. I can ship priority to Canada with max insurance allowed for less than $75.

Fedex is a great deal if you can find a discount. AQHA members get 12% off FedEx ground. Someone here stated fed-ex insurance is free. Not true. $100 insurance is free...over that is about $1:$100 coverage. If you can't find a box within USPS dimension guidelines- an excellent choice. Typically runs between $25-40. Too high to send to Canada.

UPS is routinely the most expensive. It makes me very unhappy to pay $100 shipping to a seller who refuses to use another carrier at my request therefore saving me roughly $60.

I ALWAYS insure everything (Hello...$10 for $1000 coverage?!!) I have received demolished boxes from UPS, FedEx, and USPS (less than 3% each). I have never (thankfully) had a saddle arrive demolished. I received one saddle that arrived 1 week late- repackaged by USPS (weird) due to box damage. I have sent one saddle that arrived at Canada 1 day late USPS and 1 saddle that arrived at Washington 1 day late with FedEx.

I just sold a saddle last month and shipped it FedEx Ground with insurance and it was $35. My company let's us send personal packages via FedEx and we get the company rates. It was a good deal and it got there quickly with no problems.

UPS ground -- $35-$50 depending on the location and the saddle.

If you need to go to a UPS store be prepared to pay a lot more.

I ship them from my husband's business where he has UPS daily pick up. I always use a brand new box and wrap the saddle in bubble wrap to keep it from getting rubbed by the cardboard. Generally I charge a flat $35-$40 for shipping and almost always I break even. Occasionally it costs me slightly more.
