Some people say it's good to clip with, others say it's not and makes them sensitive to sound?

What's everyones opinions?

I won't use anything other than Dormosedan. IMO, it is the perfect clipping drug. Very minimal sweating, they are OUT, and you have a pretty long window before they wake up. Atravet is acepromazine, and IMO, basically worthless on a difficult one. And LOTS of sweating. That is all we used to have, but it isn't my drug of choice now.

I had my horse clipped tonight and ended up using the Atravet. She was great for the first time being clipped. I only had to twitch her to do her face (first time I've ever had to twitch her too).

The difference is you probably wouldn't have to twitch her to do her face with Dorm.

I have one that has always been just nasty to clip. Today the vet gave her a mix of Dormosedan and Torbugesic so I could body clip her. It was awesome. She stood perfectly still, no sweating, and no twitch needed. I've used ace in the past and it really didn't help at all.

Laurie - IV or IM? How long do you wait. Very timely thread as I'm doing a horse this week
for her first time. I only do IM.

My horses didn't sweat at all. She stood there and tried to groom me most of the time. I think she enjoyed it. Is Dorm IV or IM? Or can you get it in powder form?

IV or IM, but I do IV because it works more quickly and they get a little bit more of a "hit." But IM will work, too. Not given orally, and that would never work quickly enough or be strong enough to subdue a difficult one.

All good advice...BUT not everyone is going to able to just go buy Dromosedan.
And while @ only 1/4. cc they do wake up and you have to be carefull cause to much to often they can fall down (seen it) and its best IV.
Ace you have alot more latitude. If the horse is expected to be bad don't just start jabbing it w/ heavey drugs like Dromesedan unless you are confident w/ what you are doing. Rompum, Ace, Tob, Dromos.
Can be cocktailed in many combination BUT get your vet not gal pal or COTHer board knowledge to help determin dose, rate and reaction before you borrow a bottle n clip away. Unless you know what you are doing.
Freely dispensing tranqualizer advice needs to be prefaced w/ ASK THE VET.

I personally don't like to use ace for things like this, I like ace for where the edge needs to be taken off, but it doesn't knock them out enough for something they really don't like. Instead they move around half drunk haha. When clipping I either don't use anything or get a cocktail from the vet for clipping and that works great although the last one I got made the horse sweat way too much. I can't remember what it was, but I do remember it was a different cocktail than I had used in the past.
