View Full Version : Boot for Turnout?

So the barn I'm at now will put boots on for turnout. My horse has to have bell boots on the front or she might pull a shoe, so I have been using ThinLines, as they breathe. I am torn on leg boots--worried that they might put them on too tight, or that she'll get too hot, or they'll put them on too loose and they will slip.

What are your thought on leg protection for turnout (here the turnouts are a little remote from the barn, and I'm not sure someone would see if there was a problem right away)? Also, if you think it's a good idea, what brands do you recommend. I am negative on using old worn out boots, as the velcro might not hold, so I want to get something specifically for turnout.

if you are worried about it, and there isnt a good reason for putting boots on your horse for turnout, then why bother? It just seems like another thing that can go wrong. Esp. as it sounds that your horse has been going out without boots at other facilities...

That said, on the horses that wear boots outside at our boarding barn, we suggest fleece lined boots, two strap in front, three strap behind.

I'm not a big fan of turnout boots in general, and have never used them until a few months ago.

BUT - I have two horses and their paddock runs parallel to the road to get to our house, which is being built right now. I am unable to control the flow of trailers, equipment, etc. etc. for the dirt work and Show Pony ended up spooking badly once, and when she runs around she kicks out at her fence . She has the habit of kicking TOWARDS the fence.

Spatial reasoning skills FAIL. Luckily she didn't become lame that first big kick but she had a huge swollen lower leg and it looked really bad. After the emergency vet bills, her being on SMZ's, Equioxx, re-checks by multiple vets, blah blah plus my worrying about it, she still has a tiny bump where the incident occurred. So it made me think twice about turnout boots as that area would have been protected. I don't use them on my other horse as she wouldn't spook or run because that is work:winkgrin:

I use these boots for Show Pony and am happy with them:

I picked them because they don't have any hardware like splint boots that could become too tight or not come off if half the boot starts to go - these will come off if something was caught, etc. without a problem. Also imo it would be really difficult to get these boots too tight with the amount of liner/fleece.

There is my 2 cents!:)

Well I am considering them at this place because the turnouts are remote and if something happens and she starts running around, they might not see her to bring her in. Two days a week she goes out on acreage and two days a week in performance runs with deep sand behind the barn. So I'm thinking she needs some protection, but I am worried about the boots not staying on or getting put on too tight or heating up her legs too much. Everyone else here uses boots, I think for the reason I mentioned.
