I think a nice written note thanking them for all they have done for you and giving a 30 days notice is best.
If you are so inclined a nice thank you card with a modest trinket, candy, cheese log, coffee cup with the "Thanks for everything here is my 30 days" is always great at smoothing things.
Breaking up is hard to do. Just don;'t be shy when you visit your horse. Don't avoid people - it makes you look bad. Remember it is YOUR pony and YOUR decision.
Avoid the drama and always take the high road!

Honesty is the best policy. Be straightforward, thanks for the good times and give owners as much time as possible to fill the stall.
