View Full Version : Issues with Shipper

Very nice young lady bought a mare from me and arranged shipping (near B'ham, AL to Memphis). Supposed to pick up and go straight to Memphis. I worked on the mare for several hours to get her clean and shiny -- after all the rain, she was a mess. So, shipper arrives, load mare and I mention I'll call my client and let her know mare is on the way. Shipper casually says, "oh, I'm taking that grey to Louisiana first and then picking up a horse in Arkansas". He proceeds to say that was why he wanted to know how well the mare loaded because he planned to unload and walk her around at his stops. I was totally taken aback. My sister, who adores the mare, had a fit. So we called the client who was also angry and we decided to unload her and ship her with someone else. He remarked that shippers' routes change with their additions, etc. of horses to move. That may be fine, but after we asked for and understood it was a straight door-to-door, I think he should have let us know about the changes before coming and loading her up. I'm just glad we found out. What a piece of work! Anyone else faced such a problem? I always try to ask about routing, trip length, layovers, etc. and affirm what to expect.

sounds like a bootlegger...they have no regard for the animals. Legitimate professional horse transporters don't operate like that. I'm going to take a wild guess and say he was found on uship, travelinghorse, movemyhorse etc...

post up who is was, so someone else can be saved

Yes, please post who he was...I shipped a horse from KY to NC it was supposed to have one stop in TN. The hauler went to here and there picking up and delivering horses; took over 20 hours for a 9 hour trip. I was sooooooooooooo mad and my poor horse had not been off the trailer and was so dehydrated. This hauler was recommended by Bob Hubbard Transport since it was a short route. I called them and really complained about their recommendation.

This brings up a great point. What are good questions to ask to avoid awful situations like this?

Thanks!

Funny side note: The Grey arrived fine at our barn in LA. How many grey's could be coming from Alabama to LA last weekend? I didn't see the shipper so I can't comment on any other horses on the trailer.

That was a lovely grey! He was unloaded and walked a tiny bit at my farm while I was fetching my mare to load. Is he a Thoroughbred? I think the shipper was Curly Creek or Crooked Creek - something like that. I will find out. Yes, the young lady found them on UShip or some such site trying to save a buck. However -- the mare shipped yesterday -- very nice young man from Memphis came down and picked her up and took her directly back. He is not a commercial shipper, but was very nice, capable and knowledgable -- from Hunters Edge Farm. Got a truckload of photos from her new owner of her in her new home. She has been trying on new "clothes" (sheets and blankets) as well as being hovered over and pampered, which she likes. So, it's a good finish to the shipping part. Thanks for the comments.

Considering from where you live to Memphis, Louisiana and Arkansas are not really on the way I mean, not by any stretch of imagination. Between scratching my head and laughing hysterically, I am still lost at that route!

Ditto, what the heck is the thought process behind this??

Not all shippers are this way. I've had good experiences with some from Traveling Horse and am right now scheduling a haul with Rockin H Equine Handling out of Ohio. Great folks to work with in every way. Too bad we can't have a separate forum here to list the "good shippers" we come across.
