View Full Version : Bigger all purpose saddle pads?

Got a new saddle for my older mare, and for some reason the all purpose square pads I pulled out of my trunk to use just seem small. Not from spine to girth, but from front to back. That is, if you line the pad up so the knee part of the saddle has a little pad showing in front of it, then there is barely enough pad to stick out slightly behind the cantle.

I looked at AP pads online, but none of them describe any measurements - they all seem to be one size.

Are there some that run bigger?

Or should I not worry about it? I don't want to have a pad-edge under part of the saddle (I've been setting the pads back just a touch so they cover the mare's back properly, at least - though then they don't stick out in front of the flap, which I think looks weird).

Maybe these have shrunk over the years? They were in storage for a couple years.

The saddle is a 17.5 if that matters.

Any ideas?

LB Damron (http://lbdamron.com/All_purpose_Saddle_Pad___2630-p5526.html) has some oversize A/P pads at very good prices! I sent 10 of them to a camp and they were thrilled with them

I have good luck with the Roma quilted square pads and the Roma Reversible Poly Pads. Lettia pads are also a good size...but pricey.
You probably need something where the spine is 23" or more.

I have a 18" AP in Wide and XXXW so I feel your pain.

Some of the Roma Dressage pads don't look too "Dressagey" like, the drop isn't wicked long, etc. So you can get away with using them for AP and they usually have a longer spine.. which means longer front to back for the whole pad.

Take a look at the SmartPak catalog. They have the sizes listed on most of their pads and they have the Roma ones I've mentioned though they call the Roma AP pads "Flower Diamond AP Pad" and the dressage ones are called "Swirl Quilt Pad" and "Dressage Double Diamond Pad".

Hope that helps!
