Reserve was Enticing

Older adults champion was The Rainman

I have the results for AAY hack and CH/Res, AAO hack and CH/Res (and jump winner), AAOO hack and Ch/Res, ChHY class 1 (trip 1 judged), hack, and Ch/Res, ChHO all, Sm/MdP all (each trip judged), and LrgP all (each trip judged). If anyone has specific questions, let me know. I thought the judging overall was pretty good in the o/f but *very* strange in the hacks...

I'd rather Grey didn't do that so that those of us who did well in the hacks aren't told by someone on a BB that they didn't deserve the placing they got.

That's fine. I'm ok with knowing I'm right even if you're not, ;-) lol

I don't particularly like pointing fingers in a public forum and it really wouldn't be fair to tell someone I didn't think they deserved their hack ribbon unless they specifically asked me for that opinion, but suffice it to say that in most hacks I saw and "judged" (all but Juniors and A/Os) there was at LEAST one horse that pinned a decent ribbon that probably never saw a decent hack ribbon except at a "B" show out of 6 when it won over jumps and a couple that should have pinned and didn't that weren't used over jumps. One that stands out in particular was a pony that couldn't move out of it's own way AND misbehaved consistently that pinned very high in its hack. In addition, I noticed a good bit of the it-did-well-over-jumps-so-we'll-pin-it-higher-than-it-should-in-the-hack-so-it-can-be/have a shot at-champion/reserve phenomenon. And yes, usually I concur that at most shows judges do not bother with that type of frivolous behaviour, but here I think they do, and did, and they certainly had the time as after the lineup call for each hack there was much discussion and it took a long time to pin the hacks. Not saying this happened in each division, but I could pick out a few horses who ended up Champion or Reserve that I am quite sure pinned higher than they usually would.

Again, I'm not saying the judging stunk, or complaining since I didn't have a dog in the fight, just pointing out that from my own judging standpoint, I thought the hacks were a bit off.

Wow, good for Sketch. That pony is a real trooper, she's been consistently winning in the Children's since 2000, with a different kid almost every year. And you couldn't find a sweeter little pony if you tried.

I HAVE TO RESPECTFULLY DISAGREE WITH you in regards to YOUNGER HORSES - THE HACK WINNER WAS OAKS and HAS CONSISTENTLY WON THE HACK all year, including OCALA, HAMPTON CLASSIC, NORTHFORK CLASSIC, HITS and won second at Marshall & Sterling Finals in September....didn't see all the divisions but hack winner in large ponies I think was BRIGHTON SKETCH and wins the hack lots.....not sure who you are referring to though.....

Obviously not... because if you did, you'd know I was certainly not speaking about Oaks. It was one of my favourite horses of the day and didn't even get the feeling I was seeing it at its best (first class notably).

He is a great horse and moves well - since he is young and this was his first indoor show, proud of how gabby and he did....that one jump at the end of first round was unfortunate bcs the course had been going well until that time, but he has a promising future and will be experienced now after this year too...thanks for your nice comment:)

I was actually refering to my hack...I was 8th u/s in the childrens horses, and won the hack at Marshall and Sterling Finals this year....I was not pointing fingers at either Gabby or Olivia...I think that both Oaks and Sketch are wonderful movers...don't think that the judges were wrong in those hacks...the olders had myself being 8th and the hack winner from zones 2008 being 9th though...which confused me a little bit...but not a big deal...all I was doing was agreeing with someone who had mentioned that they thought the hacks were not all correct..not trying to point fingers at winners and say that they didn't deserve those wins. Sorry if that's what it seemed like I was doing.

I'm with you here, Garnet. Not to downplay another horse, but I have to agree. I don't know about any of the horses' previous placings, but looking at who was 8th and 9th, I agree with them being placed low. I had both Carousel and Man of the Hour in my top group for the hack - as a matter of fact, I seem to have Carousel on top and MotH second. My notes on that class are a bit sketchy because my students were asking a bunch of questions at that time, but I can certainly tell that I had those two up top and the actual winner nowhere in sight...

I agree with the hacks. Sometimes they were dead on, like the younger a/a's and the younger childrens. But sometimes I was like WOW look at that horse!!! and never could take my eyes off of it, and then they got like 8th?! Who knows. I definately think that the judges liked quiet quiet quiet, if your horse had its head up at all, you were low ribbon in hack. These were the EXACT same judges in 2007 at Zone finals, FYI. And I noted the same exact thing.

Crazy4riding...for what it's worth-when you post responses with words in all capital letters it is considered "yelling" and certainly is not necessary or appropriate.

I think that it is fairly unfortunate that specific horses have been identified here. I hope the riders, who in the opinion of the judges won the classes or placed better than some here might have wanted, do not read this.

It's a horse show. Every one of these riders worked hard to get to the finals and I just want to say Congratulations to all of those who qualified.

Let's move on.

Interesting! I'll have to see if I can find my program from that year and see how my pinnings went that year! I have to still have it somewhere...

Or not. It's a discussion, an interesting one (at least I am always curious as to how my judging abilities are stacking up and how they compare to other knowledgeable opinions), and a fair one. Outside of the general lists of names in the placings, I believe only 4 horses have been named. Only one of these in a generally "unfavourable" light, and, well, the news is out there and no one was badmouthing any critter, including that one. Of the others, they were only mentioned in a good way. Not one person, myself included, has pointed a finger in the direction of someone who they felt did not deserve their ribbon - unless you count me mentioning "the winner" of the one class not being in my own personal pinnings (which I guess if someone was bored enough they could look up the class and the horse, etc, but seriously, if they go through all that.......). I also get the feeling that the owners/barnmates/friends of two of those horses mentioned are on this board and don't seem to mind that the horses' names were mentioned.

Heck, do people really always get this bent out of shape over the idea that maybe they *didn't* deserve a good ribbon? Geez... I try to teach my kids to accept it, laugh about it, and move on. If my kid had been 3rd in the Sm/Md hack, and people online made a point to mention how he didn't deserve it, I'd be the first to chime in and ask what everyone thought the judge had been smoking, because it HAD to be some pretty good stuff.......

Sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you.
Even at finals... ;-)

Addison
Oct. 23, 2009, 07:10 AM
One horse named is one too many.

I try to teach the young riders that I am around that when we are at a horse show, part of what we pay for is the judge's opinion.

I myself thought the footing was a little firm this year at the Farm Show complex. Perhaps some of the best movers did not move as well as usual and in the official judge's opininion, did not place well because of that.

This forum is an excellent place for a discussion but we should keep in mind that there are kids involved.

Thanks for the compliment Greystone! The photographer at zones was Creek Side Photography. I am almost positive that their website is www.creeksidefoto.com. I watched Carize go in one of his overfences rounds...he is adorable!

Thanks, found some pics! He still looks like his old sleepy, unfazed self. He's a much better weight now though - he always looked too fat when we had him. Of the many horses I've had he and my pony of 12 yrs are the ones I miss most.

He seemed very mellow and happy to be doing his job! I can see why you would miss him...he seems like a great horse!

I feel so bad about the little girl that rides Blackberry. I didnt see it happen but she was stabled a few stalls down, and it was the girl's last show on the pony!! how terrible :(

Aw! I wonder if blackberry is staying in the NJ area with whoever the lucky new rider will be? I always liked watching him go around, he was cute as a button--and a very nice pony indeed. Its always sad to move on! But she has some other ponies, so at least she's still got a pony to hug :)
