I need tall boots, but cannot afford customs. My calf is 11 inches and my leg is 19 inches high but I need to give an inch or two for the drop when they are broken in. Any boots anyone can think of? Or will I have to suck it up and get customs?

My legs are similar dimensions (my boots (http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v12/86/28/50000090/n50000090_30046764_2962.jpg) are 12 1/4" around and somewhere around 22-23" tall), and I had to go the custom route. Basically, if your legs are less than about 13" and/or taller than about 19", your options are pretty limited.

No specific recommendations, but if you can find a foot size and height that fits, but the calf is too big, you can have them cut down to make a smaller calf size. MUCH cheaper than ordering custom boots, and it is really not difficult to do. No idea of the exact cost though, because I have always done these types of modifications myself.

Have you looked into Ariat's? They have a massive range of measurements, from their entirely off the rack boots to the semi-custom Monaco's. I believe their boots run from around $250 on the low end to $1k on the high end. Good luck!

As Hamptom Bay suggested, your best bet is to find a pair that fit in the shoe, and the height. You can always have leather removed to make them slimmer, and it's not difficult to do, and not expensive. That's the route I would go.

Der Dau makes a "semi-custom" boot that some tack shops carry in stock. They have more height/width options than standard size boots usually carry. They're very flattering once broken in (which takes about a week or two :)) and look just like real customs. I paid 400 for mine which was a GREAT deal. The one drawback is that it might be a little difficult to locate a shop that carries them...I got mine in Albany while I was at school.
