So, the Grand Prix Elites I purchased from Dover had the regular calf... which was too big for my small leg. I guess I need the 7.5 slim, which is on backorder. So I've been checking out those Mountain Horse Supremes based on the many recommendations. Does the foot size run true in them? Should I go with a slim in the MHS, knowing what I know regarding the others?

Anyone have experience with both brands? If so, which brand would you purchase? I want to be comfortable riding in my tall boots, not dread riding in them at shows like I do with my current field boots.

I had the same problem with the Grand Prix.......calf too big in the reg calf (and I have a pretty big calf in most other boots). I also ordered a pair of the Treadstone Elite's in the French calf which are only $350. I think they are prettier than the Grand Prix with a more tapered ankle and the leather is very nice. Only problem for me is that they are a little big at the top around the knee but this seems to be a problem for me with all non-custom boots (Ariats did the same thing). Since I like the boot otherwise so much I am planning on just having them taken in by a good shoe repair person so they will be semi-custom. They really are a beautiful boot for the price! I haven't tried the MHS but if this plan doesn't work out they are next to try on my list. They are similar in measurements to the Treadstone's so I figure I would have the same issues and need them taken in at top as well.

Search on the board for the Supremes and you'll find a picture I posted of them.

They are great!

Mine seemed to fit true to size. The foot was maybe a TAD bigger, but certainly within the range of how different brands of paddock boots fit me.

Grand Prix elites are much nicer then the mountain horses. They're softer and a lot nice leather too

I love my Grand Prix Elites. Have no experience with the MHS but thought I would give my 2 cents nevertheless. I use them as schooling boots and have had them for nearly two years. I had the inside of each boot (calf) reinforced with a new piece of leather 9 months ago ($20 at the cobbler) because they are very soft leather. They are still doing well. I would definitely buy another pair for sure.

Anyone who thinks that the Elites are "softer" than the Mtn Horse Supremes doesn't know what they are talking about- the Supremes are about as soft as a pair of Journeymens.

I don't know what Journeymens feel like, but the Supremes feel like I'm wearing a nice comfy pair of knee socks!

The Supremes are 10x softer than the Grand Prix Elites - and I've had both. The leather softness of the Supremes doesn't even compare to the Elites.

True - the older Mountain Horse boots were not very soft, but the Supreme's are new for 2009 and are fantastic.

For the OP - I would go slim. I vary between a regular calf and full calf in Ariat...and I went with the regular calf in the MHS. I can get them on without much of a problem. So would think if my calf ran small, the regular would be too big.

The calf is pretty generous on these boots - the ankle is pretty tapered though and that is where I've seen people have the most trouble getting them on.
