am bridle shopping for my bright colored chestnut.. and love the look of the antares or hadfield.. but they look like they oil up very dark.
do you use a dark bridle on your bright chestnut? or can those bridles stay a little lighter?
Currently using an edgewood, but it has stretched and would like to try a different brand.
thanks

I use a dark bridle on my very bright and chromy chestnut, and I think it looks fine. There are some pics of her wearing it on my website.

Frankly I love dark tack. I think it looks conservative and flattering on any color. Looks far better on a chestnut than the weird orange-y colors you see out there that are bound to clash....

Agree. You can never go wrong with havanna...no matter the color of the horse.

I use a dark edgewood bridle with my bright chestnut. I think it looks way better than the orangy colored bridles. One person has a light bridle for her bright chestnut and I personally do not like that look.

Yes. It looks MUCH better than any orange tack that "blends in"

Dark tack looks nice on any horse. Brown looks nice on chestnuts but I don't think very light tack looks good on anything.

Dark brown goes on any colored horse for sure! I really dislike the orange colored tack on dark horses...and it is especially awful on grays!!

I'm a huge fan of the oiled Edgewood on my bright chestnut - there's just enough of the mahogany colour to enhance his copper-penny beauty :) Whatever looks good to your eye is what you should go for.

Same here. I oiled mine pretty heavily and then let it set out in the sun for a couple hours and it turned a very pretty mahogany color.

I really like the color of the edgewoods.. but I'd like to try a different brand because of the stretching.
all of the hadfields that I've seen are very dark.. almost black. I'm just trying to avoid a color that dark.

Dark tack always looks best on any color horse IMO. Even my Edgewood has oiled to a dark brown. If you're considering an Antares, you can't go wrong with them, they are beautiful and considering the quality I think they are fairly priced.

So far I haven't had any excessive stretching with my Edgewood. I've been using it several times a week for a few months.

They start out as a beautiful rich mahogany shade. If you use Leather Therapy conditioner instead of oil they won't darken much if at all. In fact Hadfields specifically says not to use oil. Mine is dark but definitely not black.
Surprisingly, I have not had any stretching of my Edgewood so far, I use it about 2-3 times a week usually.

I have several Antares bridles and all of my show horses are chestnuts (go figure!) who run the gamut from almost "blond" to almost liver. Here are a couple of pictures; hope this helps :)

I agree. I don't like orangey colored leather. Dark, conservative tack makes the horse stand out, not the other way around...

Dark tack is never wrong. It should be what you strive for when getting and conditioning new tack.
I have about 8 Edgewoods and none of them have stretched, and the Hadfield bridle that I have oiled up darker than an Edgewood, but still quite a nice color. You can control how dark it goes by applying light coats of oil instead of dunking it.
