Tonight I'm switching from an ointment (Poly Bac) to using Plasma treatment to medicate my gelding's ulcer. With the Plasma, I have to draw it out using a needle/syringe, then remove the needle so I can "plunge" it into his eye. Is the best procedure to insert the liquid into the front corner of his eye? The ulcer is in the back of his eye- but I REALLY want to be sure this stuff gets in there... does anyone have any advice? I'm thinking of pulling down his lower eye lid and squirting it in there.. hopefully when he blinks it will cover the ulcer. Thanks!

I have only used an ointment eye medication (for uveitis) but I was told to administer it towards the back of his eye. If the ulcer is towards the back of his eye, I'd definitely try to put it towards the back. I have also pulled down his lower eyelid and administered it there. For me that is the easiest way. When he blinks, it does help spread the medicine all around.

If you need to administer medication on a regular basis for any length of time you could have your vet put in a lavage system in the eye lid. My gelding had an indolent ulcer that was medicated every 2 hrs, he got really head shy and the medicine was not reaching its target! Ulcers are very scary so be careful. All the meds can be on liquid form and administered the the lavage and it makes it so easy.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE listen to this! A lavage is so much easier for both horse and human. its a bit scary to watch it being installed but you will have a much higher success rate with a lavage because they meds get in every time
