View Full Version : Lung Whip Recommendations

I've tried a variety of lunge whips and find them all to be a bit unwieldy. Can anyone recommend a good, light weight, balanced non telescoping, non 2 piece , lung whip. All I see in the catalogs these days are the kind that telescope or come n 2 pieces, which I hate.

I had a lovely one years ago that went missing at my trainer's barn, but can't remember the brand or where I got it. Right now, my favorite is a short one that I got from Smart Pack, but I really do need a longer one. My current long one is a cheapie that's too heavy, badly balanced, and falling apart.

Hope I can explain this....
Keep the short light-weight whip that you have.
Remove the little popper from the end.
Find an old whip that still has a decent tail and cut the tail off.
Sew this tail to the end of the tail on your good whip.....Make sure you have the length you want.
If you're clever you can actually 'open up' the tails and push up one inside the other before sewing. Any ordinary sewing machine should will work, or do it by hand.
Put the popper back on if necessary.
VOILA...you now have a short handled, light weight whip with a super long tail.

I've done this a few times and have never had one come apart where I've sewn them together.

Fleck makes a non-telescoping whipe. Super light & easy on your wrist.

More expensive, but worth it!

I've never had much choice. Most places won't ship a 1-piece lounge whip- so I've always had to pick the best of what the local tack shop had- which is nothing spectacular.

(I don't think you should be whipping lungs....sounds inhumane...just saying)
on the other hand... if you want to whip in the lounge...you should get permission...

I too hate longe whips because they are unweildy and heavy (I use a coiled driving line or lariat instead) and never use them, never owned one, but I just picked up my very first driving whip the other day and boy oh boy what a lovely whip! Its a cob sized fleck, inexpensive, but its light as heck and just lovely as can be. I flyfish and its just nearly as light and handy as one of my medium sized rods. Its a bit whippy for a longe whip but they come in different tolerances I believe. Perhaps investigate driving whips, and add your own lash as mallard suggested.

heck for that matter, stop by any garage sale and pick up an old $20 fishing pole, nice handy cork grip and everything, just have to chip off the eyes and apply a lash. A 7'6" fishing pole would probably make a superb longe whip lol!

Awk! Chipping off eyes sounds as bad as whipping lungs!

Try a Westfield Whip. They're manufactured here, in the good ol' USA and they have one that has a longer lash and weighs less (the Super 60): http://westfieldwhip.com/lunge.html

Toklat used to make a nice light weight well balanced one. I don't know if they still do.

Here's another vote for Fleck whips - best ones out there and there's definitely one that's long enough and is not a telescope.

And how would one apply the lash to an old fishing pole?

Sorry! I you're right, its longe. I'm getting lazy in my old age.

Yup... the shorty I have is a Westfield that I got from SmartPak, and I love it, but I can't find anyone who sells their longe wihps close by. :(

Any old longe/lunge(lung/lounge) whip works just fine with the right wrist action...just be sure there are no 'lazy knots' in the cord.
Did you know that the 'pop/snap' of a longe whip or 'bull-whip' is cause by the end breaking the sound barrier? true fact...look it up

It's true! I read that somewhere and now every time I crack a whip I smile at my little tiny sonic boom.....

FLECK!

I longe up to five horses a day, sometimes in damp footing, which can add extra weight to the lash. The Fleck is nicely balanced, and being rather lightweight, it doesn't cause the muscle strain that cheaper, heavier whips do.

After checking out the Westfield Whips web site, they look like they're worth trying.

OK, I totally did not believe "Fixerupper" about the sonic boom of a longe whip and even felt stupid looking it up, but I came across references to the phenomenon in a Google search.

I wouldn't have thunk it, but once it explained, it seems so obvious.
