Different types of heated buckets/elements. Are one kind better?

We've always gotten the flat-back buckets with the hidden element but I'm ordering a bunch of stuff that SLT has and they just have both kinds. Are one safer than the other or is it just all construction differences. The ones with the exposed element LOOK more dangerous to me, but I don't know if that is indeed a fact or just the way it looks. I'm assuming it'll shut off when water gets that low so no burned noses. What about cleaning underneath it? That looks impossible.

On the recommendation of my feed store I got the blue one with the hidden element. They said they never had any problems at all with them - just advised against plugging into an extension cord - although my BO did that anyway! (Did use a very sturdy outdoor type of cord). The one with the element in the bottom - never saw that before, but would not buy it, personally.
