One of the most storied races in the world, the Velka Pardubicka, 4½m over huge hedges, walls, banks, across roads and plowed fields, was run yesterday and the winner, Tiumen, was ridden to victory by the 57 year old Josef Vana, who he also trained. Incredible accomplisment. Vana also trained three of the other runners in the race. He beat out 23 other runners who came from across Europe to contest this grand old race in the Czech Rep, including runners from Britain, Germany, Ireland, Italy and Poland.

Here's the replay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5crnTNO5gU).

Here's an article (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/horseracing/6299556/Josef-Vana-adds-to-his-incredible-haul-of-victories-in-Velka-Pardubicka.html) on Vana's victory, including a great pic of them jumping the massive Taxis ditch.

One thing to note in that Telegraph pic: the grey in the lower left corner is the lovely mare Sixteen, who won the race in 2007 and 2008. This year she finished in 2nd place.

She's also trained by Vana.

Here's another replay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1F5PKlYnOhw), it's a little bit higher quality.

You don't have to speak Czech to tell from the commentator's voice at the end how big of a deal it was for old man Vana to win.

She's a tiny little thing. Looks like she can't be bigger than 15hh at the most. Lot of heart in that mare. Mares have a good record in this race. The great mare Registana (http://nd01.blog.cz/356/180/54264bb3ba_2275111_o2.jpg) was also a dual winner.

That is a HUGE fence. And I couldn't help but notice Sixteen has all her braids in. Do jump jockeys not grab mane?

No, jump jockeys let the reins slide a lot when jumping, so the mane would only get in the way when retaking up the reins. That's why most times the braids are left in.

Sixteen is absolutely beautiful. Wouldn't you like to see that head looking out at you over the stall door every morning?

What Vana has done is very impressive, indeed. Has he ever brought any of his horses to the other chasing countries to race? I did see that Registana was 7th in the big Italian chase, but was he her trainer?

Sixteen is a lovely little mare.

I would LOVE to attend this race one of these days!
