I have all my old Breyers and have to downsize to move. I don't want to just give them to Goodwill or something if there's a better to do with them.

If they're in good shape, like with boxes and stuff, then sell them!

Otherwise, call your local therapeutic riding program. Most of them could use them to delight dozens of children, both in the lessons and the siblings who often are relegated to waiting rooms.

Check and see if any are rare, and check out eBay to see how comparable Breyers are selling--some collectors want even poor condition ones to remake/rehair.

Do check if any of them are worth anything!

I had three left from my childhood collection that I sold last year. One was worth $90, another $200!! Now I wish I hadn't broken all the others playing with them!

Maybe donate them to a charity (Christmas is coming.) Last year my work adopted a family for Christmas, and in addition to the stuff we bought for them, I threw in a bunch of my horsey stuff, as we'd been told the little girls both loved horses.

If they are in good condition I'd either sell them (like above check ebay for current values) or donate them to a charity. I've sent some to horse rescues, Humane Society thrift shop, Goodwill. Or if they are beat up give them to some horse crazy kid that can't afford $50 (on average) plastic ponies to play with. If they just want to play with them they won't mind a few old rubs! I've given some and made them work for some!

One of my greatest childhood regrets is selling off my Breyer collection at a garage sale. Now that I have daughters I sure wish I'd packed them away and saved them. If you don't anticipate children/grandchildren/nieces, etc wanting them, then sell them for a good price!

*Raises hand* I'm always looking for a cheap resource for unwanted models...I'd love them! I repaint Breyers and customize them into looking like real horses for their owners. I'd be happy to "remake" one or two for you in exchange for your "extras".

That said, when people have brought me really valuable ones, I have to tell them to choose another model. Some are best left alone.

I have to agree with the idea of donating them to a therapeutic riding stable!

When I used to manage one, I'd use them frequently in lessons. We'd use them in both mounted and unmounted games. The kids would love to go on trail ride 'hunts' for horses, and would all compete to find the horse that looked most like the horse they were riding!

We also used them for horsemanship classes, discussing different colors and markings, which was a great way to 'have' a horse in nearly every color, without ending up with a ridiculous feed bill!

That said, I packed away many of my own breyers when I moved. They'll be great for my horse crazy niece and my own children one day!

Make sure you don't have any valuable ones, and think about donating some to a less well off horse crazy kid.

I could never afford horses growing up, but I used to treat my breyers like real horses (I know, I'm a geek). I'd 'feed' them twice a day, rotate who was on turn-out (my room became multiple pastures with elaborate fences, which is why my mom said I had to vacuum myself), and make sure every horse was 'exercised'. When I got a vet kit there was also one or two with leg wraps that were 'recovering' from injury.

Check and see if they are valuable before donating them. So many charities have no idea of the value of things its better to sell them for $200 and donate the money then to donate the item and have the charity make 25 cents.

Don't forget Pony Lagoon -- http://www.ponylagoon.info/ That, MHSP and ebay are good ways to judge prices, although they can vary wildly. You've got to know which Misty you've got if you think you're going to get $100 for her. ;)

I sold my collection of over 100 Breyers on Ebay and then bought a dressage saddle with the proceeds. :)

We put together gift baskets using old Breyers (rescued Breyers!), well-loved horsey books, and new grooming tools, our handmade horsehair bracelets (from our own rescue horses' tails), and other horsey items. We sell them to raise money for hay for our private equine rescue. We also put together similar baskets for our Christmas project (Christmas gifts for needy local kids). We handle the gift requests for ponies by giving them a "pony basket".
We would happily take your Breyers and put them to good use, if you would consider sending them to us!

I had a collection of those painted race horse decorative plates that I didn't want to store any more. I didn't want to toss them or give them to Goodwill. I used freecycle, and got a response from a woman who wanted them for her 9 year old daughter. It was easy to give them up knowing they were going to make a little girl happy. I can't quite give up the breyers, though. Hoping I have an interested daughter or niece someday who will give me an excuse to play with them:lol:

I gave mine to a friend's daughters. They were very appreciative, and the girls were from a large family I don't think they could have afforded to go out and buy them.

I did make them tell me who the models were and what they were famous for before I'd give them to them. It was kind of fun because they didn't KNOW any of them (mine were early 80's to early 90's) but made up histories. I got a great thank you note and a few photos of my horses in their new farm. :D

No Kidding...I had over 50 as a child....I have no idea what happened to all of them. I still have the Painted Mountain horse and the Black Foundation Stallion.

I remember my grandfather would give us each 100.00 for Christmas...and I would have my mother drive me straight down to the drug store and buy as many Breyer horses as I wanted (at that time they were about 8.00 a piece..back in the 1970s)
