can someone tell me where the auction is going to be held? We would like to go but we're not sure where it's actually going to be held. Someplace on the back side maybe?
Thank you!

It's going to be held right next to the Finger Lakes Adoption Center Barn. They have a big white tent up and about 3 of the portable barns set up.
I hope you make it and can bring some friends. :) :)
It's starts at 9 with registration and then the viewing. I think the actual auction starts at about 1 PM.

I think that, at last count, there were well over 60 horses. Some of the horses that we have talked about here are going to be auctioned, including Ernie Applesauce.
It's supposed to be clear, and a little on the nippy side, so dress warmly. I'm looking forward to meeting many COTHers that I haven't met before.

Saw Ernie Applesauce last week at the track...somebody has to take him home...he is ADORABLE!.
On a different note....I'm taking My Brother John out on trial this week...I really like him, hopefully he will be my next lower level eventing prospect!
Walked through the barns last week, and there are a ton of nice horses...I hope they all find nice homes!

Hoping some COTHers come home with FL beasties!!!!

And Pinkpolowraps, wasn't it you or someone you knew who bought Adaptation? How is he doing?

First I want to offer my congratulations to BNO for taking My Brother John on trial. He is a very, very cute little guy and I hope he's everything you're hoping for and more!
I spent the day at the auction, helping out along with other volunteers (several COTHers there) to get horses settled, seen and sold. Well, not so much the sold part. Sigh.
It is a sad reflection of our economic times that these beautiful animals have virtually no worth. Many, many very nice animals were not sold, either because they didn't reach their reserve price or did not receive a single bid. Not even for $50! One track family brought 6 horses to the auction and only two of them sold. One of their fillies is gorgeous and a total love muffin. I COULD NOT BELIEVE she didn't sell! Other special horses (one drop dead gorgeous, sound gelding in particular) sold for less than $200. I am so very sad for everyone involved, but especially for the horses who now have uncertain fates.
If anyone of you are considering acquiring a horse, or know someone who is, this is an excellent opportunity to contact the trainers who took horses home with them. Several of us who are involved in the Trainer's Listings (although I am speaking only for myself at this point) will avail ourselves to escort SERIOUS buyers around the backside of the racetrack to look at the horses that did not sell today as well as others who weren't in the auction, but are on the listings.
I was fairly busy during the actual auction process so don't have an accurate handle on how many were sold (not enough) or for how much (very, very little), but I know that at least some of the sales were to people who will provide great homes/careers to their new charges.

I have to agree that so many very nice horses got passed on. :( I really had high hopes because the first few horses brought decent prices. I think horse #3 went for $1500.
But on a good note, Ernie Applesauce went for $950 to a deserving home. Unfortunately that also says a lot when a lead pony sells for more $ than a lot of promising young yearlings and nice clean sound horses that just don't have the speed necessary to be a competitive race horse. :(
I was sitting with Louise for a while and said I sure wished some of the horses in this sale had been available at the prices being passed on when I was 10 (or more)yrs younger. I'd have gladly taken a chance to buy a horse with a lot of potential for under $500.
I do hope some of you do consider taking foundation mare up on her offer to go take a serious look at some of these horses. I don't think you'd be sorry.
BTW, 'passed on' basically means they either didn't get a bid or didn't meet their reserve.

It was a long, tiring and, ultimately, distressing day. As foundationmare says, there were too many beautiful animals who were not taken home. I think that all of us are worried and upset about the fate of these, and all of the horses ready to retire, at the track.
We're leaving Ernie Applesauce up on the Trainer's Listings, by the way, because, though he did get bids, there is some question as to whether or not he met the reserve. We won't do anything with his listing until we know for sure.
The plain fact of the matter is that these horses need help. Please pass along the location of the Trainer's Listings:
http://fltrainerlist.proboards.com/index.cgi?
and the Adoption Program:
http://www.fingerlakestap.org/
to everyone that you know.
The Adoption Program is struggling to place horses, also, by the way. And each horse that is adopted leaves a stall behind for another horse that needs to find a home. I was over there, poking around, and there are some real sweethearts there. They all need their own person.

Adaptation is doing very well, he's fat (well not fat but you know what I mean) and very happy. I just talked to my friend who owns him and she said that their training schedule is coming along really well. He's at a new barn now and is like a totally different horse.
We went to the auction today and, like many of you, were so sad to watch so many horse come in the tent and leave without a single bid. I had my eye on two of them and would've bid if I had a place to keep both of them! They both went for about $900 each which was pretty high compared to the rest of them. Some people nearby where our family was sitting were buying alot of them (well it seemed like alot but I think it was only 3) not sure what was up wit that IYKWIM.

It kills me, my heart is breaking. I torture myself, knowing I cannot afford a horse right now but right before they announce the Powerball numbers I go "shopping" and fill my barn. Market View, Prado's Note, First Crack, Man of Motion, Satellite Problem are all on my wish list. I pass the listings on to friends I know who are looking - maybe someday it will be me....

Sheesh, that is depressing.
The barn where my horse is has 5-6 horses 'for sale' free- all young, most only needs a little something done [gelding] that still keeps them in the 'steal' category.
It's really, really depressing.

Ugh- this is distressing news. I had been praying today would offer opportunities for many horses to transition into new homes. The Finger Lakes horses are some of the best looking horses I've ever seen, many beautifully bred- just stunning horses!
This is sad news.... Thank you Louise and FoundationMare, for your volunteerism and assistance to these wonderful horses! I hate the thought of the next passing months, and the end of the race meet in Dec.

Ugh, I was talking to Liz from Ledgewood tonight who was the vet there (she boards at my horse's barn), and she told me it wasn't good, that there were horses not even bid on. That's so sad....I walked the backstretch last week, and there were a ton of beauties!
Not sure who was up for auction, but some of my favorites are Word Spinner, War Tale, Star's Valentine & Geneva Cross...such beautiful horses!
Just so sad. :(
Looking forward to My Brother John coming on trial with me this week....you can't beat an OTTB!

Airy Fairy, First Crack and Satellite Problem were sold!
First Crack..who is gorgeous...went to a trainer who will continue to race her. She is an excellent caregiver and FC will be very, very well cared for. Ditto for Satellite Problem. Gorgeous horse, very well kept and he was sold (for $175.00) Yes, that's correct, to a good home in Bristol. TG he went to a good home, but, OMG, $175.00????
Not such a good outcome for many others being offered today. I'm not expecting to sleep tonight.

Oh I am so sorry to hear this :(
I was just going through the Trainer listings, and there are some Amazing horses available at the moment.
This is such a depressing time of year to be at a track in the Northern part of the country - I was at Suffolk yesterday, and the story is much the same there - so many nice horses needing homes, and not nearly enough buyers.
:sigh::sigh:
Edited to add: Please tell me that Court Appointment found a loving home! I just noticed him, and he happens to be by the same stallion as the filly who stole my heart, and ultimately had to be euthed last year because her knees were totally shot... little Court Apparition was from the same foal crop as Court Appointment, and was an absolutely wonderful little filly, and seeing her "brother" in the listings is pulling at my heartstrings...

I was impressed at how huge the crowd was when the auction started and then shocked at how much of the crowd was gone when I turned around 1/4 of the way thru the auction.
There sure was some nice looking animals available.

Yes - I'd say that the Horseman's Benevolent and Protection Association will be doing a fair amount of discussion prior to deciding on doing any further auctions.
It was a LOT of work for all involved, including the trainers, grooms hired for the day and a lot of expense to put this auction on.

Court Appointment's trainer didn't have any horses in the Auction, AppJumpr08. He wasn't around when we did our regular walkabout on Saturday, so I don't know if he has been sold or not. We'll make a real effort to find him this coming Saturday, and find out for you.

While we all torment ourselves over the fate of these unwanted horses, is anything being done at the starting point, to drop the numbers and stop the disposable horse factory?
20+ yrs ago when NY started it's 'Incentive Fund' for winning NY bred horses, there was a lot of garbage bred to garbage. In some cases there might be a mare or stallion with great breeding but, usually due to an injury, never attained a decent record. Again, and I'm going to get a lot of trainers and breeders pissed off at me, but even those should never have been bred.
I have no doubt that a lot of that is still going on as so many mares that went thru the auction,. a goodly number of them were touted as broodmare material. I'd like to know why so many people think that just because they have a mare it's going to produce a GREAT foal.
I don't care what discipline you are talking about, be it Arabs, TB, QH etc., they are all over bred and a lot of garbage in every single breed. if people had to obtain a license to bred, or even had to submit to the breed registry what you were breeding to what, it might slow the breeding of inferior stock but I seriously doubt it. Now that's not to say there aren't some really good performance horses out there that are bred out of No One by Nothing as well as some horses bred up the kazoo that can't get out of their own way. Airy Fairy, if you can figure out a way to slow down the breeding and output, or somehow make the breeders more responsible to their 'product', go for it. I sure can't. :( :(

I am the proud owner of Satellite Problem!!!! I actually purchased him for $150, not $175. Not that it matters much. It is so far below what he, and all the rest, are worth. It was so sad to see so few buyers come. The big crowd gathered at the beginning of the sale was hopful, but obviously they were just curious, since it cleared out fast. The one buyer who purchased 7 beautiful horses was Gail Lehman. She owns a large hunter barn in Pittsford. Jackpot for her!
Anyway, I am thrilled with Satellite. He has been a total sweetheart so far. He loaded great, quiet in the trailer, quiet in his stall, and was turned out all day with another TB here. He rolled in the mud, pranced around alot, hung over the fence playing with my minis, eyed the chickens suspiciously, and walked in quietly on a cotton lead for dinner tonight. Tomorrow I hope to get on and see what I have to work with in the indoor arena if he seems settled in ok. He is gorgeous and in beautiful, fat, condition! I am a trainer in Bristol and have been buying horses off the track for the last 12 years.
I am so sorry I could not help more. My friend also brought home Future Dreams, planning to geld and make into a hunter. Unfortunately, he is dead lame today. :(

BVhorses, congratulations on your purchases. I loved SP when he arrived on the auction grounds. He was cranked, to be sure, and beautifully turned out. Nothing fancy, just a beautiful horse with a spit polish on him! Linda's horses are very well kept and look it!
Sorry about Future Dreams. Who was he consigned by? What do his issues seem to be? I am so sorry that the auction was such a bust, and I am sorry that the meager buyers would end up with a lame horse. OTOH, what do buyers expect for horses going for $100??? The vast majority of them are sound....they just have no value. Take your chances, folks, and don't look a gift horse in the mouth!

We know the risk of buying a horse at auction, especially when they have been raced. However, there is no reason for these trainers to dope a horse for this kind of sale when they want them to have good homes. What do you expect for $100? Well the prices the horses sold for did not reflect their quality, it was the lack of buyers. We are hoping Future Dreams has an abcessed foot or something, the farrier there said he had crappy feet. The consigner was G. Brown, who my friend says she would not have bought the horse from if she had looked up the consigner before buying. Not a reputable trainer. The horse is only 3 and not raced much. He is still a stud, so she is looking at a vet bill right off the bat anyway.

I thought there might be some conversation going on here about the auction therefore I’m going to chime in with some facts. The morning of the event I was informed that fourteen horses from eight different trainers would not be coming over (for a variety of reasons, from already being sold, a couple returned to their owners, one was sick, one was lame, etc) and of the three horses that were substituted in that morning, the big grey gelding who raced the day before was a bit sore… no wonder he didn’t sell. There were a total of 56 horses; 27 were sold through the auction and I know that at least three were sold privately outside the tent. Heirloom Thief was sold today as a result of yesterday’s contacts. 48% of the horses present were sold by the auctioneer and with the additional private sales, the total placements came to 30, or 54%. Even though a few of these will be continuing on as race horses, the majority have found their way off the track, helping to keep the sport safer for all. Ernie Applesauce was not sold because he didn’t meet the reserve. Such was the case with Brilliant Sky and Xtreme Speed. And just FYI, Outskip is not available even though he is shown on the trainer listings; the owner/trainer has told me twice that he’s not ready yet to sell this horse as he’s still racing him.
Overall, for being the first time offered, I would say the event was a success in spite of being almost completely organized by a few people who had never done this before. I was very disappointed by the low prices that the horses were being sold for, so much less than they’re truly worth. There was a large crowd initially which did gradually disperse as the afternoon progressed. The crowd was so noisy at times that it was difficult to hear the auctioneer. Therefore, I would say that the advertising was successful. Unfortunately, there was rain in the days leading up to the event so the area where the stalls had to be placed (long story about trying to keep everyone happy) was quite wet. The auction tent was well done and there were many various vendors who offered their compliments. If one were to look closely at the 26 unsold horses, not counting those that didn’t meet the reserve, from a prospective buyer’s point of view, there were obvious reasons why these horses did not sell… older broodmares, older mares who’ve been racing all along, unwieldy yearlings, horses with large osselets on front fetlocks, old suspensory injuries, etc. These trainers were cautioned that these horses would be difficult to place (i.e. adopt as ‘free’) let alone trying to run them through the ring for a tag. So, for them, the outcome was not a complete surprise though still a disappointment as we all hoped everyone would find a new home.
Finally, I’ve been told by someone in the know that the initial NY TB Breeders auction was a dismal event. We shouldn’t let yesterday squelch all hopes and aspirations of holding a bigger and better 2nd annual auction. Learn from the mistakes and prepare for success for the sake of the horse.
Sincerely,
Dr. Margaret Ohlinger

Just time for a quick note... the big grey gelding (Noteventheshadow) who had raced the day before and was a bit sore, was sold yesterday to a contact made at the auction, and moved out toward Buffalo.
Also, there are still some large auction posters available for sale. A great deal of time and effort went into producing these for those who expressed interest in proudly displaying their Finger Lakes horses. Louise, can you tell us how many remain?

I went to the track last night to pick up Johnny. The trainer signed us in, then turned around and left, lol. So I was not able to talk to him and see if Court was still there. I looked at a few of them in the shedrow, but since most of them were bays, I wasn't positive who Court was, or if he was there. It was getting late, and I needed to get Johnny loaded.
Sorry! Hopefully they can find out for this weekend on the trainer walks...if not, I'll ask my friend Rachel if Court is still available....she works for Jim.
:)

He's still on the grounds and entered in the third race tomorrow (Friday). I'll post as soon as he's run. Please feel free to call the trainer (Jimmy Kettell) who's a very nice guy and will work with you.

Ok, you wanted it, I hope this works. I put pics of Satellite Problem, the horse I bought last weekend at the auction, in a Facebook album. Let me know if this link works! By the way, Satellite has been renamed Rufus!

Rufus is a funny name for such a handsome face. Good luck with him!

He looks like a big pony, chunky with a cute face, and Rufus sounds like a pony name to me. Besides, I keep calling in Dufus around the barn, did not want that to stick. Rufus rhymes with dufus!!!

BV, would you mind fixing your facebook page so that those who aren't members can see the pictures? I would dearly love to see pictures of him, but can't. Sorry, there was a thread that told how to do it, but I'm not exactly a computer whiz and I can't remember what it was.

I know he was a handful at the sale. He had not been off the farm for 2 years and I think not much was done with him while he was there. He is fat and sassy! He is learning fast, though, is super smart and sensible, just needs some manners. Here at home he is being very decent to work with.
Thanks for all the compliments, I think he is gorgeous!
