Posting this question for a friend of mine:

She wants to try eventing but her horse has only gone in a hackamore so far. Are hackamores allowed in lower levels of eventing? This would be REALLY low level, because they are both new to dressage.

For USEA recognized events, a hackamore is allowed in both jumping phases but not in the dressage. I'm not sure what the rules are for schooling shows. Most of the schooling shows around here follow the USEA rules though, so it's probably the same.

If she has to use a bit for dressage have her try and rubber bit or a happy mouth. I event my guy in a hack sometimes (when he's behaving) and he doesn't mind the happy mouths, which is what he goes in on his "excited" days.
