I never learned the proper technique for wet-wrapping a pulled tail to flatten it on show day, and don't want to guess with the result being something that gets too tight. I'm talking about the wrap that looks like elastikon.

Can someone share the approach? :)

Don't know about the wrap that looks like elastikon, but I've always used a tail wrap, which is somewhat stretchy, but not excessively so, about 3" wide, and has ties to finish it--but I've had mine for 20 years...

I have always damped the dock of the tail with a water brush, and then wrapped--start in the middle and work up, then down to the end of the dock and back up again to the middle, where you tie it off. I do it in the morning before I load on the trailer, so I usually add a tail guard to keep the whole thing in place--you can catch a bit of hair in the first turn to keep it up also, but then you've got that pesky turned-up bit to flatten down again.

You can just pull the whole tube of wrapping off just before you get on, and away you go.

White tails, I wrap the bottom with a separate wrap so they don't get pooped on it he trailer...

I wet the tail hair at the dock and spray in lots of hairgel. Wrap with a tail bandage (non elastic) from the top to an inch above end of tail bone, then back to middle. Tie off. Then put on a velcroed on, neoprene tail guard (Pros Choice ones are good) before getting on the trailer.

I sewed a handy tube of lycra as a travel tailbag - it has a 2" strip of velcro hooks on the top inside, and the other end sewed shut. I slide it on my arm inside out, grab the tail and pull it into the tube. The velcro grabs onto the top of the Pros Choice tail guard - you can velcro the bottom strap over it too for extra security. Stays on in the trailer and slips off easily to leave a clean tail!

(If I am not going somewhere extra fancy, I just use the tail guard but don't do up the bottom velcro strap. Braid the bottom of the tail quickly, and flip it up, putting that last velcro over it to hold it out of poop's way)

When you arrive, remove the tail guard and sock, and tack up. Tail bandage comes off as you enter the ring. You can also use Vetrap to wrap the tail to warm up in - make sure it's white if you have a light colored tails though!

The main secret to keeping pulled tails from looking like bottlebrushes is to wet and wrap them for an hour daily though (when riding) and/or make sure the horse's rug has a tail flap (lined in nylon or something slippery) to flatten the hair too.

I've always used an Ace bandage. When it's time to wrap the tail (if it's not already wrapped for the trailer ride), I stick it in a bucket of water or under the tap and squeeze it so the water gets all the way into the roll. Then I start at the top of the tail, spiral down and maybe back up if the wrap is long enough then tuck the end into the wrap. I only stretch it about 50%, and don't leave it on for more than ~15-20 minutes, usually the time it takes to groom and tack up.

This is what I do as well, however we put it on at the end of grooming and then warm up with it. It's typically on for just about an hour, and never any issues.
