Hi everybody! First of all sorry for my bad english, I'm italian and I've just discovered this beautiful forum about horses!
I've a 16 yo gelding named Cillo and he's the sweetest horse in the world! I usually ride him in the country and have some trail riding. Three years ago the vet diagnosed a light COPD and I began to cure him for this desease. At first I treated him with cortisone and antibiotics, then I founded a good natural vet and I followed an herbal cure. Cillo now is well, he just has some trouble during the hottest part of summer but I'd like to give him something during the whole year in order to prevent and reduce the problem. Of course he lives outside and he anly eats appropriate hay or soaked hay. A girl told me about Wendal Herbs products, does anyone of You use this for respiration problems? Or do you have any suggestion to give me about some effective product? Many thanks!

you want clarages -- or easy breath by naf naf wendall garlic herbs also helps if hes bad then you need a vet to get ventipalin and bute hay and all feedstuffs need to dampen and haylage is better than hay for horse fly mask fly rug, shavings bed if in and out as much as posible dont stable or turn near crops dont ride whilse having an attack of copd also you might think of having bute for the horse via the vet when it needs it with ventipalin which is expensive copd is cronic obstruction plumunary decease
is a hyper sensitive to dust, pollin and the enviroment they live in ie trees fields bushes etc
it can be managed to a degree by doing simple things to help the horse
dont feed mouldy or dusty hay dont stable on straw and dont stable in windy part of the yard or near crops
worm you horse regular to aworming programme of cycles of the worm to seasons of the year

Wendall's makes a herb blend for Respiratory support and so does Hilton's Herbs - Freeway. My horse with allergies gets one or the other (depending on which store I go to) year round. It seems to help, in addition to soaking her hay. Welcome to the COTH BB!

I use spirulina with great results, my horse was diagnosed many years ago and this is all I have to use but can't skip a day or I know it.

Thank you all! The horse is already living in the paddock, ha's never had a real COPD attack (he's only a light problem for the moment) and he's followed by a very good vet who told me to ride him without problems (obviously not when it's really hot or if he doesn't look in a good shape)
Now I'm trying with Wendal Herbs, I hope it will help him!
For Ann: I've never heard of Spirulina formulated for horses here in Italy, can you tell me if there are any specific Spirulina products for horses or do You use the ones for people? I 'd like to try it because I know Spirulina has a whole of good properties. Thanks again

I just use the stuff from herbalcom. I did just recently read that spirulina is like lichen and it absorbs whatever is in the environment while it is growing, that is kind of scary. I hope it is grown in a clean environment.

I did a search on spirulina and although it has many good benefits, the one thing mentioned over and over was to be sure it came from a reputable source.
It can absorb toxins from the environment because it is an algae or similar. I would be cautious on where I bought it.

My mare has COPD/heaves and is especially bad in the summer heat & humidity. I give "Breathe Ease" which I buy online: http://www.equusezcare.com/servlet/the-3/Breathe-Ease-(2-lb.)/Detail
Breathe Ease is a traditional chinese medicine.
It does a good job but it still isn't enough in the worst part of the year. But I am in the Southern USA and the humidity is terrible. I've never been to Italy but think it's more like the climate in California would be... ? So it might help.
I've tried the Hilton Herbs formulations but they didn't help at all. I've also heard of a Canadian product that is supposed to be really good but they won't ship to the US.

Hi Boomer!
I live in northern Italy, in Liguria. During Summer the maximum temperature is about 35°C and there is about a 70% humidity (I've never been to California unfortunately....but perhaps...;)) . The worse month for my horse is Agoust, then it takes him a couple of months to feel well again.
The vet says there are no chronic damages in his lungs but during these three months he doesn't breathe normally.
Every year I give him some fitotherapeutic product which were suggested me by a natural vet but I don't know if you can find them in the US. The main component is Equisetuum and then a very effective herb tea which composition is secret. Now I'm doing quite well with Super Respiration by Wendall Herbs (have you ever tried it?) but I'll have a look to Breathe Ease, I've never heard about this product in Italy!
My horse also seems to feel the bad weather approaching, so does yours? When there is a temporal approaching he breathes faster and coughs a bit (this during the whole year), when the weather gets fine again the horse is ok.
