Know of any places to get used tweed jacket for cubbing?

Hello, I am slowly collecting gear so I can go out with my local hunt next year. Does anyone know of a place with used tweed jackets that would be good for cubbing? Thanks so much for any help. The new ones I saw are beautiful, but lots of $$$!!!!!!!

I found both my heavy weight melton an tweed coat at a thrift store for $10 each. The tweed coat still had the $495 price tag on it.

Keep an eye on ebay and online forums. Look for a brand that you know will fit, or go by the measurements. If in doubt, buy a little big and have it tailored in.

My personal rule about buying online is to only buy its its a really great deal, such that I can resell easily for what I paid or more if it doesn't fit, or I don't like it. If its only a so-so deal, then I pass. Have ended up with two extremely expensive pairs of field boots this way, for $100 each pair, nearly new and worth $600+ a pair. Just waiting on my hunt whip to ship over from England right now, paid $125 for it. But you have to be willing to wait. I bought my first cubbing coat on clearence, just a brown hunt coat, not a true tweed, but I didn't look out of place at all. Then I found a great deal on a fantastic tweed, right after the informal season ended, so I still haven't worn it yet. Can't wait! I spend way more time planning what I will wear hunting then I ever spend planning what I wear in non-horsey life.

I've gotten several previously loved tweed coats on ebay for less then $100. Irish made. Look for the ones Bookster sells. They measure them accurately and give excellent descriptions.

And the Old Habit in VA often has 'fairly hunted' tweeds on consignment, www.oldhabit.com (http://www.oldhabit.com). New stuff is reasonably priced too.

Stupid question here - but are these jackets from goodwill you are referring to "hunting"coats, or just regular tweed jackets (like a sports coat)?

Just curious... I have only ever found the latter... :(

The brand new coat I found was made by English Country Classics. I saw the same one I found at Winterthur this spring now priced at $695. I have found high end (Tailored Sportsman, Pytchly, Grand Prix) at thrift stores for @ $10 each. I spent about a month in 2007 searching thrift stores and then sold everything on E-bay and made a few thousand dollars on my finds plus ended up with a great hunting wardrobe for myself.

Radnor Hunt Pony Club has a great Outgrown Shop that has adult clothes as well as children's gear. I was in a few weeks ago and there were some beautiful tweeds. If live nearby or are coming to the horse trials on the 10th you should definitely stop in.

I wouldn't think so. On the other hand, I wouldn't bother- life is too short to start counting buttons on tweed coats, and if anybody said anything, I'd smilingly ask them, if they are so good at counting, how many couple of hounds do we have out today?:cool:

You don't move the two button holes, you ADD two more and stitch the lower ones shut, so the buttons are from the waist up. Takes 15-20 minutes.

With only two holes, my tie is constantly coming out -- very irritating!

I was over at the farm house in south carolina the other day and they had all there tweeds on sale for 50% off.. they had a decent selection of colors and sizes.. might be worth a call. 864-457-3557 i dont think they have there tweeds on there website though.
