Rasta got trimmed a bit too close this week and vet has recommended uisng Keratix, venice turpentine, or strong iodine on sole along with some bute to keep him comfortable (its gotten better each day, but he's still reluctant to go forward at the trot - even on both reins, no heat in either foot). I have some venice turpentine, but hate using it cause everything in the world ends up on the sole...no Keratix and it'll take several days to get it here if I order.....any suggestions or comments about strong iodine??

I've used 7% iodine solution to combat mild cases of thrush and/or strengthen the sole. I dilute it down from 10% iodine.
Some folks also like Durasole, which is iodine + some other stuff and is more widely available than Keratex.
If you want to take the high-maintenance route, you could always do venice turpentine + duct tape boots for a few hours daily.
Sorry about your bad trim! :(

thanks! BTW, my saddle is doing fine now...still needs more padding up front, but the "balance" issue has been remedied by ME getting MYSELF balanced - ha!
Hope all is well with your pony!

Funny you should mention my pony. We just moved to Columbus, OH and he just got his first trim from our (wonderful) new farrier. We pulled his back shoes off and I was sure he was going to be sore, but nope, he stepped off sound and we had a great ride yesterday!
My saddle is great but needs a restuff in the front too. Well, realistically it needs to be narrowed to a Medium Narrow, but I don't have $300 sitting around! We could survive with a restuff up front. Heck, we are surviving WITHOUT the restuff.
PS--I use a spray bottle for the iodine. It's easier than tangling with brushes and hoof oil bottles.

This stuff is great. It does stink but it also really works.

My vet just recommended Durasole for my mildly-footsore horse, and it seems to be working great so far. Might be a good alternative.

crossapol (recommended by my farrier, and used on walls, soles and frogs)
