View Full Version : SPINOFF : Smartcontrol IR as preventative?

I emailed Smartpak but pretty much my only answer was 'talk to your vet'. My vet didn't even know what the supplement was so that didn't do me much good.

I've got a horse with a hard cresty neck, and big fat pad at her tail dock. But her weight is good. She also has the slowest growing hooves ever, despite supplementation. But anyway, I have not had the mare actually tested for IR, but she does fit some of the symptoms. I'm not all up to date on my herbs, so I'm not sure if anything in the Smartcontrol IR would hurt a horse that was not IR. She's been a variety of magnesium supps with no results. Would it be safe to use the supplement as a preventative or not even preventative, would it be safe to use on a horse not confirmed IR?? I know stuff like Thyroid supps/meds can cause a horse to not be able to regulate correctly once they are pulled off (or something to that effect, can't remember exactly). So, what ya think? Safe to use on a 'suspected IR' or not?

Safe? Yes probably-but it does have selenium in it so if you're giving additional selenium supps right now, do the math to make sure you're not OD'ing.

I have had great results thus far with Smart Control IR....much as I can't believe I'm saying that!

I just saw your thread on it (why I put Spinoff on mine. reminded me I need to ask about it:)). I have been thinking about it for a while now, but have been putting off ordering until I looked into it more. I saw the selenium in it so I'll be doing some math. I know her vitamin supp has VERY little selenium in it, but I'm about to start her on Smarthoof and need to check that one.

Glad you have seen some results from it! I might get a one month supply and see what happens, if I can find out for sure it won't hurt a non-IR horse. She may very well be IR, and I plan to have her tested at some point but probably not until next spring.

I've got my mare on it and she's not been tested for IR and/or Cushings, but I've had her on and thought she did pretty well! She's also "classic" for IR and Cushings....

But she stopped eating it and so... I'm awaiting the pellets sample to see if she likes it :)
