Has anyone that is not interested in showing, since it is not legal, used Valerian to help calm a tense horse? I have some of the powdered form from an herb store. Does anyone know how it is administered? Dosage amount?
Thanks in advance.

My friend used it for rehabbing a horse. Ace made him dangerous, but with valarian root he was managable. She fed it to him on grain. I don't know the dosage, but I think it varies from horse to horse.

We used to use powdered valerian based Quietex on our hyperactive headshaker. It helped him do dressage without headshaking. Unfortunately, we got a batch that was much more potent than the other batches and it made him sleepy. I decided it wasn't safe to leave him on the Quietex since he was eventing.

Thanks for the replies.
I was hoping someone might know what amount to give.

This is the product I used on a train wreck of a MFT 1 oz AM & PM - kept him sane.

I used it because it had valarian in it. I weaned him off of it as he out grew his bad behavior and then passed it on to another family with a psycho horse.

The only other time I used valarian it came in a gel tube - I would give the whole tube at one time.

I have the powdered form

Since the manufacturing process can make the strengths vary, I would follow the manufacturers recommendations. If those are not printed on your container then it is not for horse use and I would discard it. Or contact the manufacturer for that specific application.

I tried valarian root on my stall rest horse and it did nothing at all. Works for some though.

Good luck!

The Valerian that I have is from a bulk herb store. It is in a powdered form. It isn't specifically formulated for horses, it is in it's pure form.

If I only gave my horse things that were "formulated" for horses they sure would miss their flax seed, their corn oil or soy bean oil and their black oil sun flower seeds. (not all at that same time obviously)

I'll talk with my Vet...
