View Full Version : how much msm to be effective?

i tried looking it up on the search, but no results came up.. i'm certain it's just a bug with the site, because i KNOW msm is talked about here lol.

i'm looking at a product on ebay contains 9600 mg glucosamine sulfate, 4000 mg MSM, and 4600 mg of Vitamin C.

is this really enough msm to make a difference? right now, leader is getting 12,000 mg of msm a day with no other joint supps. he needs more support and the vet didn't tell me a damn thing i didn't already know today when he saw leader (very unpleased with this new vet and i'm switching to one that's further away than this one, but knows what she's talking about)

so do you guys think the glucosamine added in will make up for the fact that there's less msm than what he would be getting if he were getting pure/straight msm? and if that's the case, should i just add a bit more msm to it? because i really like the joint supp because it has glucosamine sulfate instead of hcl.

thanks for your input :)

I feed MSM separately not inconjunction with other supplements and always feed twice what is recommended

From some of the scientific research I've read, MSM should be 20,000mg per day to make a diifference. Most supplements don't come close to that. I'll see if I can find the article.

wow 20,000 mg? that's so much. even more than the dose of pure msm which is usually 10,000-12,000. i think i will supplement the additional msm with this joint supp

Have you thought about keeping him on what he is on now and just doing an injectable glucosamine?? It's cheap and you know he's getting it all...

i didn't know there was such a thing. about how much does it cost and do you have to get it from your vet? also, is it the sulfate?

edit:
just looked it up online. the first thing i came across was this:
http://www.equinedoc.com/Glucosamine.html

along the lines of what you're talking about, right? and you're not kidding, it is pretty cheap :)

yes...that's along the line of what I was talking about and you can get it from your vet, There's some controversy over feed throughs especially when it comes to glucosamine. It's said that they don't absorb it very well and the injectable is much more effective because you know they are getting it all and it's not going through the digestive system. Makes a ton of sense to me!! A few of the girls at my barn use it for their horses and seem to think it really helps.

Edited to add: It comes to about $3 a shot. You would still need a loading dose which I think is once a week for 4 weeks then once a month after that.

I use the SmartMSM pellets and they are 10,000mg. It's been about 4 weeks and we are starting to see some benefit from it.

that's awesome! :) it's $3/shot from the vet? that's soo much cheaper than adequan or legend.. wow. i'm very glad you replied :)

i use animed's msm and it's only $10 for 80 days. i'm really not sure how much of an effect it has, because i've had leader on it ever since i first got him. he was horribly lame when i got him, because he hadn't had his feet done in about 8 months so that was to blame. i'd be way to scared to take him off the msm, though lol.

From my vet...yes it's only $3 a shot :) If you want the added chondroitin sulfate, like the website you posted is advertising, it might be more, but will still be very cost effective.

i realllly like that haha. now i just have to find a decent vet around here. i took him to the only vet in sumter, which was simply a "large animal" vet with equine experience so he could be examined and we could figure out the cause of his verrryyy acute (but still there) lameness. the vet had no idea what to say and couldn't tell me anything i didn't already know. he basically is the type of vet that gives shots and pulls coggins.. so i'm going to have to look around central SC for someone who knows a thing or two.. whats wrong with leader is: he is fine at a w/t/c OFF the lunge line, but when he is ON the lunge (basically when he's going in an "unnatural" circle) he cannot canter without being in extreme pain. and he also doesn't have a lot of suspension in his trot. the vet attempted a flex test and told me that leader isn't as flexible in his fetlocks as he should be so i'm going to work on strengthening him, hoping that building up his muscles will make it easier. he hasn't been in real work for almost two years (i just got him in july and he's been in lighttt work just to start to get his topline back)

The best thing to do for Leader is to find a really good lameness vet and that may require you haul him a distance. I'm lucky to be really close to one that I worship. A good lameness vet will be so worth the money and time spent because you will know exactly what his issues are and how to help him.

Good luck!!! Now...anyone know a good lameness vet in central SC???

I've always been told 20,000 MSM during an acute injury, 10,000-12,000 as support.

i agree. the barn i'm fixing to board him at apparently has a really great vet that comes and takes care of everyone's horses there. i'll see if he's what i'm looking for. if not, i'll have to look in camden which is a pretty horsey place so i'm sure there will be someone there.
