Kahsahpay is at our rescue as a Trainer Incentive Program horse. The Mustang Heritage Foundation provides us an unhandled mustang, and we have 90 days to do he ground school and to find her an adopter. The adopter pays only the BLM $125 fee - the same fee as if she'd had no handling whatsoever -- and ownership of the mare stays with the BLM for a year.

Kahsahpay is a deep, rich liver chestnut color, and stands approximately 14.3hh. She is a long 2 year old, and likely still has room to grow up and most certainly to broaden and fill out. She is easily one of the brightest and most inquisitive horses we've ever handled, significantly more so than any other mustang that's ever been in our care.

She has been here 10 days, and loves to be petted and stroked; she halters reasonably well, and is starting to lead. She already understands not to yank back, and is giving to pressure. She will stand calmly while you rub her neck, her poll, scratch her withers, and back to her tailhead. She allows a flat palm on her upper leg already, and is rapidly heading toward allowing her full foreleg to be handled.

For someone who wants to saddle train their very own mustang, but wants help with the challenge of ground school and gaining that initial trust, this is a TERRIFIC program. It helps our nonprofit as a fundraiser; it helps the BLM place more mustangs; it helps the mustang be more likely to succeed in ints new home; and it helps the owner, getting 90 days of ground school for FREE!!

Please visit our site at cwer.org for details on this GREAT mare...including when she will be starring in our enxt 2 "Learning ot Speak Horse from a Native" seminars!!!!!

Here's a fun video clip of kahsahpay -- her second day outside on a leadrope, and her first day going bicycling! :D

(disclaimer: Mike is a competitive bicyclist who has been bicycling with horses for about 6 years now. We would never recommend a green bicyclist ride with ANY horse, nor an experienced bicyclist have their first rides be with a green horse.)

We have found, especially for the mustangs, going bicycling gives them a new level of comfort with us as leader -- at last we are able to maintain similar speeds, and they can go exploring new places and enjoying new adventures all the while protected by their lead 'horse'.

OOPS! Here's the link:

Thanks, EL.

We initially did this with a horse who had a back injury but the vet wanted him doing lots of straight line walking and jogging. Mike would take him down a dirt road and back every day. Then we used it with a young filly who simply needed more exercise than she could get at our old facility where we didn't have large turnout spaces.

But, most impressive is how much the wild ones enjoy it compared to the domestics. for one mare, Wakanda, who just really was argumentative with us and didn't like this 'domesticizing' idea one bit -- she went from leary and tense around people at all times, to coming to her pen's gate to meet mike when the bicycle came by. the first time she went out biking, that morning she'd refused to allow a hand behind her shoulder; after the bike ride, mike was straddling her bareback in the outdoor round pen and was able to put a saddle and put the girth tight enough to stay safely in place with no anger, no negative reactions.

someone else asked elsewhere, so let me clarify this too please -- we are not "running them until they are exhausted" any more than we run them to exhaustion inside the round pen. The workout iwth kahsahpay in this video is under 5 minutes long. as her stamina increases, they will likely get to the point where they can bicycle the 4 miles around our 'block' once a week....

Thanks for enjoying and asking q's!!

Someone who thought that is forgetting the horse has only to take a quick left or a right to dump the bicyclist on his head. :D

:yes:YEP -- and that is where Mike's mountain biking and competitive trials skills come in to play -- he can balance the bike stopped for as long as he chooses; stop and slide and be back on the bike in a blink; he also is strong enough to keep anything other than a panicked horse from bolting out of his hands....

isn't she, seramisu?? she's got nice conformation and is a really nice mover, too!

This T.I.P. is a pretty great program for someone wanting their first mustang -- you only pay the same $125 to the BLM as a completely unhandled horse; the Mustang heritage Foundation pays us for the 90 days ground school she received so it is no cost to you, the adopter. So, the hardest parts of gentling are already done; you can already see her true personality, her way of going, and get an idea of what training areas held her attention! We're surprised we've had no one show serious interest in her, yet.....

isnt this forum for "give aways?" im seeing A LOT of "fees" lately. I think you can post on classifieds if you are charging for the horse.

"Jumpin",
Sorry for any confusion...We aren't charging anything for her at all. The only "fee" is a federally required amount to the BLM. We are putting 90 days of professional training into her at no cost to the adopter.

This gal just continues to amaze us, day by day. Mike typically gets 10-15 minutes with her twice per day. yesterday morning, his time was spent showing her a surcingle, then tightening it completely with no upset. then showing her a bit, easing it in her mouth, then bridling her. then letting her relax and just spend time with him outside on a lead.

Here's video of the time spent with her last evening....the video starts about 2 minutes after she was eased into the driving lines. (camera person was helping her get settled first.) The first hault you see is the second time she's ever been asked to stop via a bit....

What an amazing young lady this is. She's going to be one heck of a partner for someone one day very soon...
