Me. Vernon and I in the training. Hoping to put some more pieces of the puzzle together. Our dressage is borderline and the show jumping is frustrating, but the xc is spectacular!
We have a few others going, as well. Hoping the big guy and the scrawny guy duke it out some more in novice. ;)

Connor and I are moving up to Training and I feel totally sick to my stomach about it. I have never done Training before, so I will be the really green, ill looking person on the big bay .
Mark is moving up to Training also, but there was NO way I was going to ride both of them for everyone's first time out, so my trainer is riding Mark.
Okay, I am off to be ill....

Anyone have either intel or past experience with what the training course is like?

I did the training course there 2 years or so ago, and thought it was an easy one.
We are losing horses going to Morven left and right it seems! Carmen was wait listed at Training and I just said scrap it, we'll go to MD HT. So I just have the Pony going Novice and my boy going Prelim.
D and Napa are going Advanced, but because of the silly reschedule, I doubt they'll go XC. It's the horse's 4th Advanced and a little much to ask of him to go to stadium, then 20 minutes later to run a big XC! We'll see how it plays out, but I'm really disappointed in the schedule change for them.

We've got a couple on the waitlist at training, plus one in at Prelim, and one Advanced. So either way we'll end up being there all three days. Sigh.
Polo - if the training course is anything like their spring course is, it's pretty straightforward and a bit on the small side (but fair). A number of tables, and the water was at the end of the course. Coffin was a 3-4 strides on a soft bend - very inviting. Don't know if they've taken the tire jump off that always got a good peek in the field behind the water/Preliminary trakehner, but I don't recall anything else being particularly looky. That being said, it may be changed up a bit from the spring.

The schedule was changed to run the advanced over two days instead of one. If it had been a one-day event, as it was originally planned, I expect they would've been doing the exact same stadium-straight-to-XC that you usually see in one-day HTs, only the horses would've had to also do dressage earlier in the day. So the change should make it easier on the advanced horses, not tougher.
Maybe you didn't realize it was scheduled to run as a one-day advanced when you signed up?

GotSpots, the dreaded tire jump got retired 2 years ago.
I will be there in Novice with the husband horse -- our first time out since Rubicon. I imagine he'll feel almost-ready-for-training EXCEPT in SJ, where he may feel almost-ready-for-BN (it's not about size, it's about shiny. or something. STILL a baby....).
Big horse was supposed to make his official debut after rehab, but his schedule got delayed by unrelated issues (getting kicked in the a**, literally, among other things)...sigh.
Ground should be good, weather pretty cooperative!! yay!

I didn't think the leaf pit has been in the fall. I asked and was told it was used in the sping, but they hadn't run A in the spring for a bit now because of numbers. Would be cool if it's on this year's course. Did they use it last fall?

Hope it's on there this weekend, good luck with it NeverTime! If GRC isn't at the leaf pit (IF it's on the courser) taking pictures, I'll get some, other then watching some of "my boys" race at Middleburg, I have the day free once D is done in the morning.

YB, what a bummer. This seems to be the year for cellulitis - we've been battling it all summer in various forms on a variety of horses, far more than I can recall in prior years.
And, not to be at all petty, but if you are going to scratch, since we have Ti at the top of the wait list, please please please let them know ahead of time? Would LOVE to have your spot! ;) At the very least, you know you'll get your entry $$ back (though, of course, if you've got a replacement to go, have at it and have a fabulous time!).

Definitely cellulitis, but should be fine in a day or two. His vet all but said "get used to it..." He's so freakin sensitive!

My wonderful horse was seriously injured in a schooling accident today. We won't be competing this weekend or, likely, ever again.
After 12 amazing years with him, from elementary through advanced, all I feel right now is relief that he's alive, eating and bright-eyed. We won't know the extent of his injuries for a bit yet, and there's a fairly good chance he'll never be more than pasture sound, but I am so relieved that he's still here with me. He's taken me places I never thought I'd go and I owe him and love him so much.
Please send good, healing thoughts in Hal's direction (he seemed to enjoy being the center of attention today, so he'll appreciate it as much as I do). They don't come tougher than him, and that quality needs to keep serving him well right now.

While we're certainly not out of the woods by any means, the news so far is better than I could ever have hoped for.
Yesterday, he had a freak accident and basically got his foot stuck in an 18" flower box during a jump school. In the process of freeing himself, he wrenched his ankle horribly. We caught him and he stood like a rock, letting my amazing trainer hold it off the ground, while we waited for the vet to get there. The unnatural angle, the shape of the swelling... everything pointed to a fracture. The (also amazing) vet got there super quickly, palpated him and popped something back into place before we splinted him and put him on a trailer to take X-rays. Though they were both being good about "let's wait and see," a condylar fracture was among the "good" outcomes the X-rays might reveals, and I was preparing myself for worse and to put him down.
Unbelievably, the only bone damage shown on the X-rays was a fragment of splint bone. However, he likely dislocated his ankle, so we'll probably find extensive soft-tissue damage once the swelling comes down enough that we can ultrasound. Oh, and this is the leg that's had a big ugly bow for the past 12 years, so he's not exactly starting in pristine condition.
He got banamine for the pain and inflammation and, tough guy that he is, he rested comfortably all night long and even managed to lay down (on both sides, according to the poop stains!) He's walking gingerly, but unbelievably well today (he looked 10x worse when he got an abscess this summer) and seems to be doing a good job of bearing a reasonable amount of weight on the leg.
So we're doing a steady rotation of cold therapy, wrapping, hand-grazing, cold therapy, wrapping and stall rest.
There's a lot of healing yet to go and plenty of possible complications on the horizon, but he's a survivor and he's so smart and sensible. He looks like he's taking good care of himself in terms of weight bearing and limiting movement, enjoying the prime second-cutting hay that being a sympathy case will get a horse, and is generally staying bright-eyed and interested in everything going on.
I feel inexpressibly grateful to my trainer, my vet, my husband and all the girls at the barn who pitched in and helped out yesterday.
Even if he never gets ridden again, Hal's gotta stick around to impart some of his good sense to the next baby I get. I think he'd make an excellent babysitter... as long as he doesn't let them in on his secret to drifting right and "missing" the corner jumps...

Ditto what the others said. Clearly this is a very special horse in every way (and especially to you!), and it's a bonus that he is managing to handle his trauma with calm acceptance--which will help ensure that the outcome is a good one!
Many jingles and positive wishes for a good outcome from my corner (and it sounds like he is well on his way to surviving this thing: being sensible and accepting, and of course he is being helped by an excellent support team ;))

Thanks again for all the support. He's walking well enough today, though the swelling hasn't subsided any.
However, looking at the results from the advanced divisions, I'm glad I wasn't there! 3 rider falls, a MR, 5 Rs and an E. Jeez... Not to mention half a million WDs before cross country; I wonder if most of those people hadn't planned to run anyways and were just doing a CT prep for Fair Hill, or whether there was something about the course that made some peeps decide to WD?
On the positive side, looks like Jan Bynny is back in the tack and had a great day!

Dusty was one of the falls, they had a funky jump at the Monkey Bars. Napa stayed on his feet, but Dusty rolled off. Stinks too, they had a clean stadium and looked awesome out on XC. The Leaf Pit rode perfect (he said it was fun) and what I saw it was going great. I got some really good pictures of them too. Napa has one small scratch below his knee from hitting the jump, and other then getting dirty, Dusty is fine. I am so thankful both he and his horse walked off OK!!!
I saw Leslie Law retire at the water. I believe there was at least one other fall at the Monkey Bars. From what I saw and heard out there, it was a mess. I think jump 6 caused a lot of issues as well.
Finally walked my courses for tomorrow, hopefully my young horse will do well on Prelim tomorrow, it's his third one. I hope he doesn't mind Trakeners, that one is huge  I think the brush jump at Novice might be bigger then the pony, but she's got springs :D
We had a fun day overall, met up with a few COTHers, and our newly adopted 10 year old Akita got to go to his first HT.

 I was jump judge on the Leaf Pit today. All the horses did very well, only had one runout at B, but then the horse cleared. That jump was well designed, only had a couple of messy hits. Yeah, fence 6 (I could see it) caused problems. There was a delay because of the sun being in the eyes at the original start time, but most made it fairly well. Saw a fall, horse and rider. Both seemed to be OK, I hope so! Fun day, perfect weather!

NT - many folks were planning to run just the combined test, so the WDs don't surprise me. Morven is often a final tune up for Fair Hill, but I think it's pretty common to not go XC if your horse is feeling good. Saw a wide variety of horses this morning - the best rides were the folks who came out quite forward and attacked the course. Bravery and smart-kicking on made a number of the combinations look gorgeous - riding backwards had some ugly moments fast. Best of luck to everyone tomorrow. And Ishi - I'm telling myself it's not huge, just airy and keep on kicking to it.

Thanks, GS, I still didn't know how we finished this morning until I got that handy hint. ;)
All I can say is that at least I proved that the BFG can handily make the time if you just remember to persuade him a bit. Our time was 5:19, OT was 5:41! No watch, either....and I get to ride this horse once a year, maybe, on xc. At least I'm good at making time. Our other phases were so-so. His dressage was ok, but considering I don't ride him every day and I don't ride him exclusively, I guess I shouldn't be too critical. He did pull a typical BFG moment toward the very end of the test, where he sucked behind my leg right as I asked for the trot at C, chucked his head, turned into his very noodly alter-ego, and made the first 5 steps across the diagonal interesting. Then he settled right back down and finished the test nicely. Show jumping was ungodly, and he was saintly...I made a huge mistake in warm up and came off, with shook my already shaky sj nerves badly, and rode very poorly in the ring (which miraculously I managed to talk myself into, as I started panicking right as the horse before me finished). It was "crude but effective" as I was told at the end. I would like to be smooth and effective. :( The BFG, forgiving soul that he is, just jumped harder and higher to compensate for my poor riding and we eeked out a clear. He was good on xc, with just a few  moments but nothing that a little encouragement couldn't overcome. I had one moment towards the end where I thought he was going to do a very naughty spook, spin, and leave out in the middle of a field, but I think I felt it before it could get very far and we proceded without major incident.
He was fun, love riding him, but Vernon would have been more fun.

I didn't see Jane Sleeper's fall, but I did see the aftermath. UN looked a bit off, but she walked out of it, and Jane rode her back off the course, so I think she was just stung.
The falls at the Monkey Rails were interesting. I saw both of them, and the horses must have been jumping it funny, because the riders just kind of tipped off on the landing side.
Mystere du Val was not having a good day. He ran out at the corner after the drop by the mansion, and then he stopped at the jump in the water. He just looked like he didn't want to play.
But the majority of horses on the advanced and intermediate looked awesome. It was a beautiful day, the ground was not too hard, and it was a pleasure to be out there watching gorgeous horses jumping cross-country!

Dustin said he just tipped a bit forward on take off, which caused him to come off on landing. Napa jumped fine, I didn't see it, but saw the yellow pinny as D fell. Napa seems 100% fine today, Dustin complained about being a little stiff this morning  I really dislike that jump, I say it every year, and was actually saying it to someone 10 seconds before he came off on landing there. I shoulda kept my mouth shut LOL!
BornFree, I saw the Prelim Trakener on the Intermediate course, it used to be B of an ABC, they took out A (was a skinny on an angle IIRC) and while it's not a huge one, it's really airy with a skinny log on top to a short 3 after a really long gallop. I was a bit worried about it to be honest.
Today was interesting for me. My green bean I think no longer can be called that, he rocked on his third Prelim, just rocked it. The Trakener...piece of cake. Same with 5AB to 6 and the bounce. I was so proud of him! I was not so spectacular and had a mistake, but he more then made up for us. I always think of him as my young greenie, but I guess he needs a new title now!
The pony tried very hard, it was her second Novice, has the same judge as her first Novice, got the same exact dressage score. Jumped parts of stadium brilliant, some like her tail was on fire. Then she was quiet, confident and really impresses me on cross country. While I wasn't in the ribbons on either horse, I was really happy with both of them! And I have to say, that little pony seemed very pleased with herself after cross country! It was a little spooky cantering up to the Novice brush jump and not being able to see the other side of it, she's a wee little thing with springs!

hmmm...not sure if it was the same one then. The one I jumped was scary looking too (airy)...but was a piece of cake once over it.;) I've never seen it on the HT before but it has been on the CCI* course a few times.
Anyways...I always love it when my horse makes some I was worried about feel super easy. Makes you smile and think "why was I worried"!
Congrats on two great xc trips for your horse (and pony!).

Nope, BFNE, different one. The one you're thinking of was on the intermediate course and usually is on the CCI* course (in the treeline, after the water). This one was over near where the sunken road used to be, behind what's usually the Advanced xc warmup and was I think most all divisions' warmup. Very airy and impressive looking but jumped fairly well, and caused enough hang time that the three strides worked out well. Quite a big bounce for Prelim, but it rode fairly well, particularly after the three big galloping fences beforehand. Gorgeous course and great footing!

Well I was photographing the water for all levels and the trekhener for novice. I got two spectacular falls in the water. One was our USEF president...he was ok, but it was kind of an artistic shot I got because it was backlit with the water splashing.. When his horse ran off and jumped the ropes, I hoped he was going to get a perfect two strides in between them, but he added and pulled the rope down!
I saw Ishi's hubby's fall from the front. It was similar to a fall before him, but that rider was stepped on pretty bad. I think her horse was tired and just hung a leg. His seemed unlucky. A lot of horses were hitting it. Except Jane Bynny's horse, In Mid Air. Holy cow! That horse jumped about two feet over everything. Also saw you go by on the pony Ishi. Man, was she pulling! And you're other boy went through the water just fine after he had a peak.
Jane Sleeper's fall looked like the horse just pecked on landing. She was a good girl though and stood there when Jane called to her to stop. Well trained!
Overall, it was a long weekend, but I saw some good rides.

Huge CONGRATS to Inquisitive!!!! :D
Thanks :)
Our dressage went a little downhill but being in the indoor he just had trouble concentrating and kept trying to look out the door  Definitely have more to work on but oh well.
Stadium went well for us. I couldn't believe the number of rails though. Found out later that only four went clean!
XC was a blast. It was a pretty technical course, thought nothing was huge, so it was a nice change after running Middleburg last weekend (which was bigger but not as technical).
Very proud of my boy, as he always puts a smile on my face during XC :D
Put him away and headed up to check on scores. My dressage score was pretty high and I was 7th I think? Saw they hadn't posted XC scores yet so I ran to get some food and check out pictures. My mom looked at the scores after stadium and told me I had moved to first! I said no way, but then by the time I went back the final scores were posted. I couldn't believe it! It was kind of nice to see that stadium and XC played a bigger role in the final results, though it was kind of upsetting to see how many had trouble with them.
Great day for us and now we're just eagerly awaiting the ATCs at VAHT!

ugh, is Sunflower Studio the one that won't even show you the pics before you buy them? I wish we had some kind of standard that allowed the photogs to feel they get their money's worth (so folks don't just use the proofs, etc), but allowed the riders to SEE what they are getting before they buy. I just was at an event where apparently the photogs took literally dozens of pics of both my boys on the (short) xc round...but will only sell me the whole thing for 75$, no sneak previews.
I'm not paying 75$ for what could be dozens of pics of me cantering around in between fences -- this is not a photog I know. I'd have more faith in GRC sight unseen.
Ok, rant over.
I was thrilled with the husband horse although the scoreboard doesn't show it. His dressage was really lovely and consistent and although he typically scores 6-7-8s he got only 6-7s, so I guess that the judge was seeing something I didn't feel. I shall have to consult my trainer :D He did swap out of the canter behind right at the juncture between 2 movements (first time for that, no idea why) so the 2 5s that garnered did us no favors.
Did anyone else find SJ warmup really crowded and distracting? Mr. asterix, who is SJ warmup guru at waredaca, was quite exercised about this. There was no steward, no idea when you are going, no one to put back up the fences a trainer lowered, and no control on how many folks were in there. I guess I'm spoiled, but I found 12 horses jumping at once really mentally overwhelming. I gave up after the pony put in one or two good fences.
Luckily all our hard work at home paid off and he was SO GOOD in SJ (usually his weakest phase, I have to convince him that every fence is not going to eat him and he will ball up and have a 4 foot stride, no kidding, quite a feat for a 17h horse!). Just really, really, really grown up and in front of my leg. Best round of his whole life.
XC I thought was a nice sturdy novice course and expected him to roll right through it. Unfortunately he really had NO idea what to make of the brush fence -- he has never seen anything like it and didn't seem to understand what it was at all. He locked on the training corner happily, as he's jumped that before, but when I pointed him to the brush next to it he just went blank mentally. He was very obedient and bunny hopped it after getting RIGHT up to it still without understanding it was a jump (this was quite the feeling, let me tell you), but it really rattled him and he was behind my leg and tentative for the next 5 fences -- even the water which was so simple he was very green about, after schooling lots of T waters with aplomb.
No real harm done, he sorted himself out before the bigger fences came back, but it was not what I was hoping right before the champs.
Work to do in some areas, progress made in others. Guess that's the sport, right?

:yes::eek::yes:
It was a nightmare. Connor HATES having horses come up on him from behind or pass too close to him going opposite directions. He will pin his ears, try to kick, lunge, etc. I have to be constantly on my guard to prevent him from being a brat. He will also prop hard if he thinks someone coming towards him gets too close. At one point, I was on a left lead canter and called the oxer. Someone else was cantering to the right and called the vertical. Thinking logically, I tried to go left to left (as I had been taught in the H/J world) to pass her; she tried to go right to right and Connor had a coniption fit. He propped so hard that I almost fell off. I apologized and said it was all my fault (although I still think everyone should pass left to left ).
I also saw several riders fall in warm up and others take out the oxer a few times. It was chaos, that's for sure. Thank goodness I was still able to keep Connor focused enough and he was really good in stadium- super twisty tough course that it was!

I was JJing at # 7 for Prelim (little cabin after coming thru the Quary and down the hill). I must say whoosh.. Fast and Furious coming down that hill! It was exciting to watch although I wondered if some would be able to slow their horses down enough to get over the cabin! All but one cleared it fine, one rider had to circle as her horse was really flying! Ishi you looked great, and the little pony was so cute. I was JJing at 17A & B for Novice.

SJ warmup was nucking futs! I'm used to hunterland warmups but this was crazy. Dressage warmup was a little crowded too, I was in the indoor and there were about 6-7 people in that little ring trying to warm up. Fortunately my steady eddie guy kept his wits about him (except for those skeery sunspots). :) Very proud of him for staying focused in the big indoor.
SJ was not our best, he rides so much more differently at shows than at home -- he'll canter right up to the fence, then really suck back so he can take a good look at the jump, so I feel like our jumps are U-G-L-Y.
Oh yeah, and make sure you jump the right first fence on XC... fortunately I got all the way to fence 10 before they caught the error.

The bounce was big - and forward - but rode quite well. I think the three galloping fences (the table and two oxers) right before it really set you up well for it, because your horse had "forward" on the brain at that point. I came into it at what I would call an aggressive show jumping canter (a couple of ticks up from a coffin canter - though perhaps a step down from the wee-bit-too-fast SJ round I'd had twenty minutes before) and it rode beautifully. Being rolltop/rolltop made it a bit forgiving, though I think you had to jump in with some enthusiasm, less you land too short from the first one and make the out a bit more of a scope question than it needed to be.

I thought the bounce walked and rode short for my horse. I had to jump in, sit up and be positive, it was his first XC bounce too. I was really proud of him for how unquestioning he was about all the new stuff to him, he really seemed to slow down his brain and think. BIG step for him!

One from home, you have to go through a gully that has road stone and then straw on top of it. Supposedly, Mazetto had a nasty slip there. Darn!
Oops, I saw this one--and I'm not entirely sure the horse fell. Jump judge said it did, but it's not what I saw--however I only saw it out of the corner of my eye. Both horse and rider were fine though.

Ishi, my whole family was there to watch most of the Advanced, and we saw Dustin come off after the Monkey Rails! My daughter was taking pix, and actually got one of him and the horse after the fact (it appeared that Napa hit the top rail, which threw Dusty off balance on landing.) He had looked great up until that point; what a dissapointment! (And unfortunately Diana didn't get a shot of him at the water complex :( She has a great camera, and got some amazing shots of some of the A riders there--nice shot of him over the corner to the table that you posted--they looked fantastic! :sigh:
Saw some real good saves among the A rides, good assertive riding and remarkable scope on the part of some of the horses!
Jan Bynny "Inmidair" (which was amusing when Brian O'Connor announced them as they went around: "Jan Bynny, in mid air!" made it sound like she was being popped out of the tack at every fence, and hovering somewhere above the horse ) Diana got a shot of her horse over the table/rolltop in the water, after the brush drop into the water: her caption: "Holy overjump, Batman!" The horse stuck a little on the landing into the water, and then LEVITATED over the out fence. Which was fairly sizable. He must have given it at LEAST two feet of clearance! Just shows how important pure scope is in these upper level horses...
BIG congrats to inquisitive, and my sympathies to asterix and Catalina re: the stadium warmup; sounds like it was quite the cluster f*uck! (I'm sure my poor mare would have blown a microchip under the circumstances, and that would have been that. :p)
Ishi, your little horses are just WOW! You must be so proud of them--and where did you get such great photos?! Do you have a photographer friend who is THAT good?? I love your incredibly soft following arm, and your enviably secure lower leg. Of course it helps that you are long-legged on small horses ;) But really, your position should be a "tutorial"...
I saw that  Prelim airy Trak (gulp), and we got a pic of it with hubby (6'4") standing IN the ditch for scale...Yeeks! All that was visible was the top of his head. I did not get to see the bounce logs for P, since there wasn't time to walk the entire P course. It was obviously harder than the spring one, though *that* one had some big honking stuff on it! But that particular Trak was *definitely* intimidating!
piaffeprincess, please let us know when the pix are up; I would love to see Ishi's Prelim boy's pix!
Good job, everyone--what a great weekend we had, weatherwise. I was envious of those who got a chance to ride (though I did do a CT and a cross country school at Gordonsdale with the greenbean, but of course it's not the same thing ;))

You are referring to "Drive Mode" which specifies single shot or continuous shooting. It actually does require a sense of timing though that comes with experience and it's very easy to get the hang of using it with automatic creative modes such as "Sport" where all you have to do is point and shoot at the right time.

I want to preface this post with how much I love GRC. I love how easy the website is, the great prices, the friendly people, etc, etc, etc. When I order pictures they come quickly. The pictures I've gotten have been great, however.....
Why oh why do you all take pictures at the most awkward jumping fences on course?!?!
In all fairness, I should probably skim through other training level horses before I whine too much, because it is very likely that the BFG is awkward and the fences actually look great for others. However, of all the xc pics taken of him, only about three of them are actually good (as in, he and I both look great). The log on the mound did not inspire great jumping form. The steps up (especially at the angle shot from) just aren't that impressive. The water caused him to be a little green and silly and flop around a bit. The coffin made him look and crawl over the first log (the ditch picture was cool, though). I still don't get why you all don't go to the biggest, galloping fences on the course and take pictures of THOSE. Why was no one at that big table on the far side of the course??? THAT would have been a great one. Or a better angle for the trakhner? Or the double brush thing after the Quarry?
Oh well. There are a couple I really like, and there are several from sj that I'm thrilled with how good they look (despite my craptastic riding). Maybe I'm mad because I look like an idiot in most of the awkward pics, too!:lol:

yb, I'm afraid that I must agree with you on all counts, and with all points. The compliments *and* the criticisms. (And have actually mentioned these very things myself, in previous posts.) We do LOVE GRC, for the aforementioned reasons--*however*--if they would just change a few basic things (things that are relatively easy to change), they would not only increase customer satisfaction, but they would sell more pictures, too. And isn't that the whole point? ;)

They always take one pic from behind on x-country; explanation being that they need to "get the pinney number clearly in the shot" for each rider...
But yeah, I suspect than nary a rider purchases those pix taken from behind ;)

well, I for one am glad about the choice of pics this time (although, one could quibble -- Novice, fence 2, listed in the dictionary under "dinky" :D, and the bank, HEAD on, not the best angle...that field had almost ALL the novice course in it, why did they only shoot 2 fences??)...the munchkin had an uncharacteristic fade at the base of the trak (although I HATE traks, he is blissfully unaware that they are anything to be concerned about), and I was really bummed, thinking maybe I have corrupted him after all...
but the photos show clearly a call of nature in progress at the exact moment of sucking back.

My mare's photos are quite nice but this one (http://www.photoreflect.com/pr3/Orderpage.aspx?pi=0EBK00AT1Y0023&po=23&pc=54) is a bit of a mystery.
(She finished well inside the time but sheesh, was she really going that fast? :D)

I think perhaps you should buy and frame that one!

Ok guys. I was shooting the novice trekehner. I could only reach the bank with the maximum zoom on my lense, so I made the trek. my priority. If I remember last time, people complained at this show when someone did cover that whole field because the photos were from too far away.
JER, that shot I took as a placing shot between riders. It must have gotten put in there by mistake, no big deal. Wasn't deleted when sorting.
As far as butt shots, yes, we need to get them for sorting purposes. Sometimes I miss the headstall number. It's hard to focus on that tiny thing when you are galloping by so fast.
For training, I was put there to cover the water and coffin. I thought they were jumping the log into water and the coffin awkwardly as well. But I thought my angle was better than head on, which I know a lot of people don't like.
If you have a suggestion for a fence to shoot, please, tell Gary. He's a friendly guy. I took everyone's suggestions for the Leaf Pit coverage and told him, but at that time of morning, it was completely in the dark, so I apologize for that. I wanted to shoot it too!
On a side notes, #245 was the amazing fall shot I got. It was silhouetted in the sun.

Thanks PP. I think sometimes the folks picking which jumps to shoot don't always know which fences will jump well, and thus pick jumps for the lighting rather than for getting a good jump, or pick multiple fences over one good, big one. For example, the Preliminary coffin/Quarry and the bounce were both taken - but neither makes for a particularly good picture - the quarry is very hard to see, and the bounce gets sort of an awkward jump. To the extent you can encourage Gary et all to pick the big-honkin' table/oxer, he's more likely to get the type of pretty fence that folks will buy. There's only so many shots of cantering through the water that I really end up wanting to buy, but I'm a sucker for a photo of my boy with his knees up.
Now if you could just fix my position in the air . . .

PP, I don't know why I don't think to go say something to him, because I know when I walked the course on Friday evening, I thought to myself, at the table, THIS would be a good picture. I AM glad to here to it wasn't just my silly horse who jumped the water and the coffin a little awkwardly. He's a good boy and tries hard, but he IS a spook at heart. Considering he missed SO much of the year (again) this year (first his broken jaw and then a raging, gigantic abscess that took a couple of months to clear up), he was so good for me.
I wish he jumped like this over everything- http://www.photoreflect.com/pr3/Orderpage.aspx?pi=0EBK00AS4S0062&po=62&pc=65 - I look much more happy with THIS jump then I did some of the others. But I love this horse.

YB, believe me, you probably don't have time! I know I don't after I walk my course. I am rushing off to get ready. I usually don't even have time to look at my photos when I'm at the show.
PS, you're position is enviable!

QUOTE]
Are the training photos posted? I only see day two....

Hahaha, go figure it's David O'Connor! I won't go into GM mode on his leg position/stirrup length, though... ;)

piaffeprincess, no worries here. I just thought it was funny -- but I assumed it had a purpose in the logistics of photographing 100s of horses. :)
I'm happy to see any photos of my mare because I'm usually far away so I'm grateful for photogs who post their shots online.
(And I never worry about butt shots because it's not my butt in the saddle. :D)

Thanks GS - he was great. Nice to sit on one that jumps like that! I hope all his babies jump that well too... Can't find your photos - where are they? What was your number?
