View Full Version : Getting rid of a Porcupine

Does anyone have any magic tool to get rid of a porcupine? We haven't seen him come and go, but he ate a hole through our pine floor, and then left quills all over everything. He has also eaten our tires.
I'm not around enough to shoot him, and other things are getting stuck in the live trap.
We left DCon out, and if he was the one that ate it all, it was enough to kill an elephant.
But, does anyone know how to get rid of them, or at least keep them away? 15 years and I've never had a problem like this. I'll take the raccoon any day.

Porcupines are called nature's pruners, they will kill a tree munching on it a few nights.
One of our stallions pawed at one, got some quills in his ankle, the vet thought he had them all, one wandered into the joint, caused an infection and we lost the stallion.
We take care of those that come around the yard with a 22.;)

killing it with a gun is not the ideal response, but it probably is the best. 90% of relocated animals die. And Dcon can be VERY VERY VERY bad. What if a mouse ate it, and then died in the hay?

Good point, but it was put under the floor, right where it was living, so we are 90% sure it was the porcupine. We hope it was, at least, or else there will be some very sick mice or rats or raccoons.
No barn cats or dogs around, no stored hay. This cabin is 2 miles from anyone, and we just use it for hunting and horseback riding when we trailer up.
We never use DCon at the horse farm or real house!
When are porcupines active? We'll need to stake it out, because we've never actually seen it. Just the damage and the quills.
Bluey--that would explain what happened to our pines, too! We couldn't figure out what was eating them. It looked like beavers, but the creek is too far away for them to wander up here and they have ample supplies of food down there.

Well, if your cabin is in the middle of nowhere, then it is fair game for the porcupine, really.;)
We only dispatch wildlife varmints like those when they are messing around the house and barns, otherwise, we leave them be.
When coons spend all night climbing the electric wires to the flat roof of the house and trying to dig in the roof, tearing a big hole, when they make a big hole in the wall of the feedroom and trash it, then we take measures.
Your situation is borderline, because without living there steadily, you can expect wildlife to make a home of your home, goes with the territory.
Be glad it was not a skunk.
You can tell if a porcupine has been munching on trees because you can find all sorts of pieces of green branches on the ground around the tree.
They can be very destructive here, where we don't have but a few trees around.
I wish they would love mesquite brush as well.

Actually, we stood there looking at the hole and the poop, cursed the bugger, and then said thank god a skunk didn't follow him in here!
