First of all, I hope this post isn't considered advertising, but if it is then I apologize. Let me say up front that I receive NO benefit from any horse adoptions-- I'm just a volunteer trying to help find horses homes. Okay, end of disclaimer :)

I want to get the word out about a not-for-profit horse adoption organization in Syracuse, NY, with which I volunteer. The group is called Sunshine Horses, and it's based at the New York state fairgrounds. Most of our horses are former Standardbred racehorses (OTSBs? ;) ) who either lacked the desire/skill for the track, sustained an injury that prevented further racing, or just got too old for racing, but we also welcome other breeds into the program, which have included thoroughbreds, quarter horses, paints, and others. Many of the horses are completely sound, and those who aren't already trained under saddle (ie: the racehorses, who are trained to drive) usually readily accept new training and make great mounts for a variety of disciplines. If you've ever worked with standardbreds, you'll know that they generally have remarkably steady temperaments and are quick learners. Others are best suited as companion horses, such as 2 standardbreds that were bought out from under the meat man at auction (one of whom was just adopted yesterday-- WOOHOO! See "Dusk" on the "happy tails" link of the petfinder site below).

The main reason I'm posting this now is that our program has multiple horses on the wait-list, and recently several of those waiting have met not-so-happy endings. So I'm asking for help-- these horses *need* to find homes. Of course the ones in our program are safe, but until they find homes, others can't come in and so they are left at risk. Please check out our petfinder site at http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NY861.html where you can view the most updated list of our adoptable horses as well as our "happy tails." For more information on the organization itself, go to http://nysunshinehorses.org . Keep in mind that there are horses needing adoption that aren't physically in our barn and are therefore not listed (working on changing that). If you don't see exactly what you're looking for on the petfinder site, you are welcome to contact us as we may have an unlisted horse that meets your needs. In the past we have placed horses that have never set foot in our barn.

I should also mention that we prefer that our horses be adopted to barns within a reasonable distance of Syracuse so we can visit the barn, but the "reasonable distance" may be longer in some cases if we have a contact in the adopter's area.
Thanks for reading, and please pass the word along! There are so many excellent horse people on this board, and YOU are the kind of owners we would love to see our horses go to.

I think Mass, ME and NH also have mostly standardbred adoption programs...have you considered working with them.
Good luck.
Maybe you might want to post about the horses who could be adopted.

fivehorses- I think the founders of our organization are aware of several other programs, but I'll mention it to them to make sure. My fear is that they, too, might be overwhelmed with horses. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm a little bummed that this post got moved to a place where it probably won't be seen as much, although I'm sure the mods had their reasons... I guess I figured that since we're doing essentially the same thing as CANTER, whose horses are discussed quite frequently on the Off Course and other discussion forums, it would be okay to post it there. Guess I was mistaken. Oops.
