View Full Version : Yikes, mare w/discharge at ~75 days in foal...?

Today I noticed one of my mares had some cloudy discharge. She is somewhere around 75 days in foal... just so happens that she also somehow injured her eye lastnight too (when it rains, it pours, huh?).
Watched her throughout the day, same amount of discharge.. started on SMZ's this evening per vets orders. Will ultrasound her tomorrow.
I haven't seen the discharge dripping, and like I said, it's a cloudy white color. The mare seems to be acting okay. Has anybody had any experiance with this? I know normally when there is bloody/brown discharge then your really in trouble... thankfully we're not there yet.
Would Regumate do any good at this stage in pregnancy? Is it possible we may not be able to see the fetus (if there still is one) because of the stage she's in, I know that they will often drop over the pelvic brim.
FWIW, she had a full breeding workup before I bred her. Clean culture/cytology, and a IIA biopsy score, with the comments essentially saying that there is no reason for her not to get in foal, and carry to term. The repro specialist also noted no abnormalities. She does have Caslicks, as the breeding farm I got her from does that for most of their mares. She is *hopefully* still working on her 6th foal.
Is there anything in particuliar I should ask my vet? I've never had a mare loose a pregnacy before, so this is new to me

Could it just be from hormones? I think their estrogen levles start to rise at this point, no?
I have one mare that has two bouts of cloudy/yellowish urine from about day 20 of her pregnancy. So far so good but it definately stresses me out! It has only lasted one day each time but I do see yellowish drips on the ground here and there when it happens. So hopefuly it is just hormones with your mare. Good luck!

I have no idea :/
She got her second dose of the SMZ's this morning, there doesn't look to be any additional discharge.... maybe we caught it in time? I also started her on some Immunall because I've seen such drastic results with it.
Still planning to ultrasound today.
Any other thoughts?

I had the exact same thing happen to my mare about a month ago. Turned out to be vaginitis, she was on Excenel for 10 days. Took a few days for the discharge to clear up!

Hoping it is not what happened to me. Wintermaske had some discharge before losing pregnancies twice this year. The first was about 35 days and the second was about 60. C&C was fine, so no infection. We are regrouping for next year. Sigh...

Does she have a temp? Does she have a bag? I would think it was vaginitis.

Nope, no temp. She does have a bit of a bag, but it's that "mare that's had 5 foals" kind of bag. There's been no increase in it.
Poor girl. We did ultrasound her this evening, and(not suprisingly) the vet couldn't get a good look at the uterus as it had dropped over the pelvic brim. He caught what he thought was a glimpse of a fetus. He said if he had to hazard a guess, he would say she's still pregnant. She still "feels" like a pregnant mare apparently. We drew some blood and will hopefully have the results by the end of the week. The vet said it was a bit early for placintitis, but isn't unheard of. There were no abnormalities on the ultrasound. We may do a vaginal speculum exam tomorrow if there is anymore discharge.
She has to be on SMZ's anyways for the eye injury... would Tucoprim treat vaginitis? He didn't say anything about that.
Home Again Farm- When Wintermaske lost the fetus at 60 days, did you see anything expelled, or just the discharge? I'm sorry, she's such a beautiful mare

Tucoprim, Uniprim & SMZ's are all the same drug.

Yep, I know. Guess I should have stuck to one name, but my mind is a little bit all over the place tonight.
At this time we are not going to use Regumate, but if there is more discharge tomorrow, we will consider it.

If it helps, our vet ultrasounded one of our mares on the belly directly in front of her udder at day 69 and saw the fetus clearly after not being able to see it rectally, of course it had fallen down due to the time frame like your mare. We could see the full skeleton and it was galloping around already, amazing!!! Jingling for good news for you. :)

No nothing seen. It was a very strange experience and I am praying that next year goes normally, as she has been a wonderful producer.

You can't have placentitis in a mare only 75 days in foal. The placenta is not formed/developed until close to 5 months. This is why the very earliest cases of placentitis are at 5 months, but more commonly diagnosed in the 7-9 month time frame. So certainly there can be something wrong with the pregnancy, but it is not placentitis at this stage.
